Furniture Retailer Stakes $50 Million on UConn's March Madness Journey
A New England furniture chain has placed a monumental wager on the success of University of Connecticut basketball, offering to refund customers a staggering $50 million if both the men's and women's teams advance to the NCAA championship games. Jordan's Furniture launched this audacious promotion earlier this year, potentially reimbursing approximately 20,000 customers for purchases made between January 20 and February 16.
Customers Embrace Unlikely Financial Windfall Opportunity
For customers like Brian Mazzilli of Plymouth, Massachusetts, this promotion represents a potential $3,800 refund for his living room sofa and coffee table purchase. Previously not a college sports enthusiast, Mazzilli has transformed into an ardent UConn supporter following the men's team's dramatic buzzer-beater victory over Duke in the Elite Eight round.
"We thought the chances were pretty slim, but now we're pretty excited," Mazzilli confessed. "It just didn't seem that both teams from one school making it to the finals – that seems kind of a long shot." He compared his reaction to UConn's last-second win to his celebration when the New England Patriots secured their first NFL championship in 2002.
Insurance Backs High-Stakes Marketing Strategy
Jordan's Furniture isn't risking its own capital for this $50 million promotion. The company secured insurance coverage for the campaign, mirroring their 2007 strategy when they offered refunds if the Boston Red Sox won the World Series. That previous promotion resulted in approximately 24,000 customers receiving $35 million in reimbursements.
Eliot Tatelman, the retired president who remains the public face of Jordan's Furniture in television advertisements, expressed enthusiasm for the promotion's potential success. "We want this to happen," Tatelman stated in a Thursday phone interview. "Whether they win or lose, I got to pay for the insurance."
Strategic Expansion into Connecticut Market
Tatelman revealed that the UConn promotion emerged from strategic discussions about increasing Jordan's market presence in Connecticut, where competing furniture retailers have established longer histories. The promotion applied to furniture, mattresses, and accessory purchases during the specified period, with certain exceptions.
The Massachusetts-based retailer, founded in 1928 in Waltham by Tatelman's grandfather, operates eight retail locations throughout New England. If both UConn teams succeed in their Final Four matchups, the company will distribute refund checks to eligible customers.
UConn's Championship Weekend Showdowns
The undefeated, top-seeded UConn women's basketball team faces South Carolina in the Final Four on Friday night, while the men's team, seeded second, prepares to battle Illinois on Saturday. Both victories would trigger the unprecedented $50 million reimbursement program, creating what could become one of the most expensive marketing campaigns in retail history tied to collegiate athletics.
This promotion represents a unique convergence of retail marketing, sports fandom, and financial risk management, with thousands of New England customers suddenly invested in UConn's postseason performance beyond traditional school loyalty.
