France advanced to the World Cup 2026 final after a 2-1 victory over Spain in the semi-final on Tuesday. Kylian Mbappé scored both goals for France, while Spain's Álvaro Morata briefly equalized in the second half.
First half dominance
France controlled the first half, with Mbappé opening the scoring in the 25th minute. He received a pass from Antoine Griezmann and slotted the ball past Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón. France maintained pressure but could not extend their lead before halftime.
Spain's response
Spain came out stronger in the second half, and Morata equalized in the 55th minute with a header from a Jordi Alba cross. However, France responded quickly, and Mbappé restored the lead just five minutes later with a powerful strike from outside the box.
Late drama
Spain pushed for an equalizer in the final stages, but France's defense held firm. Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris made a crucial save in the 88th minute to deny Pedri. France will now face the winner of the other semi-final between Brazil and Germany in the final on Sunday.
According to France manager Didier Deschamps, "The team showed great character after Spain's equalizer. Mbappé's second goal was world-class, and we are delighted to be in the final."
