Robbie Fowler Criticizes Liverpool Defender Ibrahima Konate for 'Defeatist Attitude' in FA Cup Quarter-Final Defeat
Liverpool icon Robbie Fowler has launched a scathing critique of defender Ibrahima Konate, accusing the £36 million star of exhibiting a 'defeatist attitude' during Liverpool's humiliating 4-0 FA Cup quarter-final loss to Manchester City on Saturday. The heavy defeat at the Etihad Stadium saw Arne Slot's side unceremoniously dumped out of the competition, with Erling Haaland's clinical hat-trick and a composed finish from Antoine Semenyo sealing City's passage to the semi-finals at Wembley.
Fowler's Analysis of Defensive Frailties
During his post-match analysis for TNT Sports, Fowler expressed significant displeasure with Konate's passive defensive approach in the build-up to City's fourth goal. The goal, which was Haaland's 28th career hat-trick, originated from Jeremy Doku's incisive run, which Fowler believes Konate failed to counter effectively.
'You know you have tough times, I mentioned before about leaders, just look at the reaction from Konate, that's like a defeatist attitude, someone who sort of gives in,' Fowler stated emphatically. 'Don't get me wrong, it's a great finish, the movement is great, it's a good goal by City, but I actually want a bit more from my team defensively, I think Konate just gives in.'
Fowler further elaborated on his observations, noting that this was not an isolated incident. 'I've seen it on more than one occasion this year with him where the ball goes past him and he's quick to sort of give in,' he added, highlighting a concerning pattern in the French defender's performances.
Salah's Struggles and Penalty Miss
The match proved equally forgettable for Liverpool's talismanic forward Mohamed Salah, who endured a torrid afternoon. Salah squandered a golden opportunity in the first half and later saw his second-half penalty saved by City goalkeeper James Trafford.
When questioned about his confidence in Salah taking the penalty, Fowler was brutally honest. 'I've got to be honest, no,' he admitted. 'I think that was not only because of his performance but because of the chances he missed. He has got the quality to change games but today he just wasn't at it from the off. He put the ball down and for my sins I actually thought he was going to miss that. I hate myself for thinking that.'
Champions League Selection Dilemma
Despite Salah's poor display, Fowler believes the Egyptian winger should retain his starting position for Liverpool's crucial Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday. 'I think so. I mean, what are the other options you've got, who comes in? That's the problem that you have for Liverpool. You want a little bit of experience, you want someone who has been on that stage because it's a massive game.'
Fowler concluded by acknowledging Salah's enduring potential. 'Of course you'll have players who will want to come in and do a good job, but Mo Salah is Mo Salah, he can, as much as he's not had the best game today, he's not had the greatest season, but he can be a difference so I think you've got to start him because I don't think anyone can come in ahead of him.'
The comprehensive defeat has intensified scrutiny on manager Arne Slot, with pressure mounting following Liverpool's exit from a major domestic cup competition. The performance has sparked debates about defensive resilience, individual accountability, and squad depth as Liverpool prepares for a pivotal European fixture.
