Two senior figures from the USA's World Cup setup were quietly suspended by FIFA ahead of their last-16 defeat to Belgium, according to reports. Team manager Sam Zapatka and security vice president Frank Pannell were barred from their duties during the match in Seattle, which ended in a 4-1 loss for the hosts.
Suspensions Published Without Explanation
FIFA posted the suspensions on its website before the game but offered no public reason for the decision. The incident that prompted the action is believed to have occurred during the previous round against Bosnia and Herzegovina, not related to the Folarin Balogun eligibility controversy, according to the Daily Mail.
Neither Zapatka nor Pannell could perform their usual roles against Belgium. The exact nature of the incident remains unclear.
Balogun Controversy Adds to Drama
The suspensions add another layer of off-field drama to a tournament already marked by controversy for the host nation. Much attention had focused on striker Folarin Balogun, who was sent off against Bosnia and Herzegovina, triggering a one-match ban. However, Donald Trump personally lobbied FIFA president Gianni Infantino to reconsider, and FIFA suspended the ban, allowing Balogun to play.
Belgium appealed the decision but failed to keep Balogun out. The striker played but made little impact as Belgium dominated.
Belgium's Dominant Victory
Atalanta forward Charles De Ketelaere scored twice for Belgium. Malik Tillman briefly gave the USA hope with a free-kick, but goalkeeper Matt Freese's error gifted Hans Vanaken Belgium's third goal. Romelu Lukaku added a fourth in stoppage time, sealing a comprehensive 4-1 victory and ending the USA's World Cup campaign.
Pundits suggested the off-field distractions may have negatively affected the USMNT's performance.
Record Viewership
Despite the loss, the match set a record for the largest US football broadcast audience, peaking at nearly 37 million viewers, according to Fox. Unfortunately for American fans, the peak coincided with Freese's error that led to Belgium's third goal.
