Ipswich's early promise undone by a slip
Ipswich Town arrived with a clear game plan, using the pace of Julio Enciso, Issa Diop and Daizen Maeda to threaten United's defence. Their approach paid off in the 29th minute when Leif Davis gave the visitors a deserved lead, putting victory seemingly within reach.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically just before the break. A slip from Marcelino Núñez gifted possession to United, and Fernandes capitalised with a powerful left-foot strike that levelled the score. From that moment, United took control and never looked back.
United's second-half blitz
In a devastating 12-minute spell between the 56th and 68th minutes, Manchester United scored three times. United manager Michael Carrick had been emphatic that the team's poor 2-0 defeat to Hull was "just one game", and this performance proved his point, particularly in attack. Ipswich's opener had exposed defensive vulnerabilities, with Davis's goal coming from gaps in United's rearguard, and Chuka Akpom's added-time consolation resulted from sloppy defending by Lisandro Martínez, which allowed Enciso to set up the substitute.
