Rio Ferdinand has advised Manchester United to seek an understudy for Luke Shaw rather than a replacement before the summer transfer deadline, following the club's 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town. The former United defender made the comments on his YouTube channel after Shaw endured a difficult start in the match, which saw him beaten by Abdul Fatawu in the build-up to Leif Davis' 29th-minute goal.
Shaw's Consistency Defended Amid Criticism
Shaw, 31, and the rest of Michael Carrick's squad faced heavy criticism after a 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City in their Premier League opener. However, Bruno Fernandes' hat-trick inspired a spirited fightback at Old Trafford, securing United's first win of the campaign. Carrick substituted Shaw for Noussair Mazraoui with 17 minutes remaining, one of five changes in a breathless second half.
Ferdinand launched an impassioned defence of Shaw, claiming he has been one of United's most consistent performers over the last 12 months. He argued that fans calling for Shaw's exit are misguided, stating that the club should look for a left-back to 'bed in over time' rather than force the club's longest-serving player out.
Budget Constraints and Transfer Realities
Ferdinand highlighted financial limitations, noting that a ready-made replacement would cost around £60 million, which the club cannot afford after significant spending on midfield reinforcements. He said, 'We haven't got the budget after paying the amount of money that we have to reinforce the midfield.'
He also referenced United's links to Newcastle's Lewis Hall, but noted that Newcastle have reportedly ruled out a move. Ferdinand suggested that the club does not see Harry Amass as the immediate answer, saying, 'The club don't think Harry Amass is that guy it seems because he doesn't seem to be close to it at the moment.'
Entertainment and Future Prospects
Ferdinand praised United's entertaining display against Ipswich, despite a nervy first half where they conceded too many chances. He said, 'It was nice to watch after an uncomfortable first half,' and emphasised the importance of entertainment for fans. He added, 'Manchester United today have entertained us so you know what? I'm satisfied after the first half.'
United will face Everton away next week, having finished the weekend in tenth place in the Premier League table. Ferdinand concluded that Shaw remains good enough to play, but the volume of games this season means an understudy is needed for the long term.
