The Atlanta Falcons have secured their star running back for the long term, agreeing to a three-year contract extension with Bijan Robinson that runs through the 2030 season. The deal, announced on Tuesday, makes the fourth-year player the highest-paid running back in NFL history, with a base value of $66.75 million and a maximum value of $75 million through incentives.
Robinson's extension includes $51 million guaranteed, and his average annual salary of $22.25 million surpasses the $20.6 million average of Philadelphia Eagles' Saquon Barkley, who previously held the top spot among running backs. The news was first reported by NFL Network and ESPN, and Robinson's agent, Nicole Lynn of Klutch Sports, celebrated on X with the post “Anyone have a brinks truck?” The Falcons also shared a photo of a smiling Robinson.
Robinson's Reaction and Team's Relief
Robinson reposted the NFL's Instagram post detailing the extension on Tuesday morning, writing “God this is for you! Blessings. Love this team and this city!” His enthusiasm was matched by Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski, who said, “Obviously very excited for him, excited for us.”
The extension resolves a tense period during training camp, where Robinson spent the first week, including Monday's first day in pads, as a spectator. He attended practices but did not participate, an apparent contract “hold-in” as he sought a new deal. Stefanski acknowledged the process, saying, “I just knew throughout this whole process that it would be a process and I felt good about where we were. I think everybody understands how we feel about Bijan the person and Bijan the player.”
With the deal finalized, Robinson joined practice on Tuesday, and the Falcons no longer have to worry about their star running back's status for the upcoming season.
Robinson's Stellar Performance
Robinson's new contract reflects his exceptional production on the field. Last season, he led the NFL with 2,298 yards from scrimmage and scored 11 touchdowns. As a dual-threat back, he finished fourth in the league with 1,478 rushing yards while adding 820 receiving yards, a feat only matched by Steven Jackson in 2006, who had at least 1,400 rushing yards and 800 receiving yards in the same season.
Since being selected as the No. 8 overall pick in the 2023 draft, Robinson has been the focal point of Atlanta's ground game. His two Pro Bowl selections underscore his impact, and this extension solidifies his role as a cornerstone of the franchise for years to come.
