England have secured their place in the World Cup 2026 knockout stages after results elsewhere confirmed their progression. The Three Lions now face Panama in New Jersey to determine whether they finish top of their group.
England's path to the knockout stages
England qualified for the Round of 32 without kicking a ball on Friday, thanks to results in other group matches. However, top spot remains undecided. England and Ghana are tied on four points, with Croatia on three. Victory over Panama would likely secure first place, unless Ghana beat Croatia and overtake England on goal difference. England currently hold a one-goal advantage in that tiebreaker.
Team news: Saka and Rashford to start
Bukayo Saka is expected to make his first start of the tournament after recovering from an Achilles injury that sidelined him for five Arsenal matches in April. Manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed Saka is 'ready to go' after training without issues. Reports indicate Marcus Rashford, Morgan Rogers, and Elliot Anderson will also start, with Jarell Quansah replacing the injured Reece James at right-back.
Reece James injury blow
Reece James will miss at least the next two games due to a hamstring injury, confirmed on Thursday. The Chelsea captain's absence leaves a gap at right-back, with Djed Spence, Jarell Quansah, and Trevoh Chalobah competing to deputise. Tino Livramento was ruled out before the tournament began.
Sheringham expects changes
Former England striker Teddy Sheringham predicted Tuchel would rotate his squad. 'I think there's going to be a lot of changes,' Sheringham told ComeOn. 'Thomas Tuchel used all five subs against Croatia, and with this squad, you don't lose much. Whoever you pick, you're losing at most 2%.'
Match details and broadcast
Kick-off is scheduled for 10pm BST at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. ITV1 and ITVX will provide live coverage. England's previous group match ended in a goalless draw against Ghana.
