England were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Ghana in their second World Cup group match in Boston, with Thomas Tuchel's side struggling to break down a well-drilled Ghana defence. After a thrilling win against Croatia, England dominated possession but failed to create clear-cut chances, leaving their qualification for the knockout stages on hold. Four points from two games will almost certainly be enough, but England must wait until their final group match against Panama on Saturday to confirm their place.
Defensive solidity but attacking woes
Jordan Pickford had little to do but was caught in no-man's land midway through the second half, causing a moment of panic. The decision went England's way, but Ghana's bench, led by Carlos Queiroz, was furious. Reece James had a poor outing, offering little offensively and being caught upfield when Ghana countered. Ezri Konsa defended well, particularly against Antoine Semenyo, and played a key role in denying Ghana a late winner by pressuring Prince Adu. Marc Guehi was recalled ahead of John Stones but had a quiet game. Djed Spence, starting ahead of Nico O'Reilly, provided a presence down the left but was left isolated when Anthony Gordon failed to track back.
Midfield struggles
Declan Rice failed to produce the telling pass when required. Much of the pre-game talk focused on his enormous workload for Arsenal last season, and it showed in a jaded performance. Elliot Anderson was the more inventive midfielder, playing 20 passes into the final third and having four shots before being replaced. Noni Madueke had another frustrating night, finding good positions but failing to pick out teammates. Ghana doubled up on the Arsenal winger, but he did little to justify another start once Bukayo Saka is fit.
Attack fails to fire
Jude Bellingham drove the team forward and helped out defensively, looking the most likely to create something before being replaced by Morgan Rodgers. Anthony Gordon, starting ahead of Marcus Rashford, had a quiet game, reluctant to come inside onto his right foot. Harry Kane was largely suffocated by Ghana in the first half, getting just nine touches, two of which were in the penalty area. In the final five minutes, he had the goal gaping but hammered the ball over the bar.
Subs fail to make impact
Tuchel's substitutions, which worked so well against Croatia, failed to spark a winner this time. Morgan Rodgers replaced Bellingham but could not influence the game. The result leaves England needing just a point against Panama to advance, but the performance raised questions about the team's ability to break down stubborn defences.
