Emmanuel Petit has warned that Arsenal may not have an easy start to their Premier League title defence when they face newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night. The former Arsenal midfielder, who won the double with the club, expressed concerns that the visitors could offer more resistance than many anticipate.
Petit highlights challenges for Arsenal against promoted side
Arsenal are overwhelming favourites to secure three points in their opening fixture, especially after their 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City last weekend. However, Petit believes that playing the first game of the season against a promoted team presents unique difficulties. 'Playing the opening game against a promoted team is never easy because you might not have your rhythm yet and they will be so determined to have a positive start,' Petit told Grosvenor Sport.
Despite his caution, Petit acknowledged the strength of Mikel Arteta's squad. 'Having said that, the spine of this Arsenal team has been the same for years and they understand each other very well,' he said. The Gunners will be looking to build on their Community Shield success and start their league campaign with a win.
Coventry's first top-flight game in 25 years
Coventry City, managed by Frank Lampard, are playing their first Premier League match in 25 years. Petit noted the challenges faced by promoted teams, stating: 'We all know the reality for promoted teams. It is quite difficult to survive that first year, and so many promoted clubs have been yo-yoing between divisions for years. It would be a gamble for Frank Lampard and Coventry.'
Petit emphasised the importance of the opening game for Coventry's confidence. 'Playing against the champions is a huge challenge, if they have the chance to make a good impression, that will build confidence within the team. That is something very important,' he said. 'If they are thrashed by Arsenal by, say, four goals and fail to show up on the pitch, then their confidence will be very difficult to recover.'
Lampard draws inspiration from recent survival stories
Frank Lampard has urged his Coventry side to take inspiration from Sunderland and Leeds, both of whom avoided relegation comfortably last season. Those two teams became the first newly promoted sides to survive in the top flight since the 2022-23 campaign. Coventry are odds-on with many bookmakers to be relegated straight back to the Championship, along with fellow promoted teams Hull and Ipswich.
Lampard said: 'They've changed that rhetoric a little bit. Those stories are important for us to analyse and we've looked a lot at those two specific teams. To see how they played gives us inspiration, but it will be us that manages to make that story for ourselves – but, of course we've looked at those stories. We want to be confident in what we do, it's our job to set out the strategy for the boys game by game – and they deserve to be here.'
Impact of the opening fixture on the season
Petit stressed the significance of the first game for both teams. 'For many reasons, the first game is vital to setting the tone for a long season. If Arsenal play with that same attitude, it will be really, really difficult for Coventry,' he concluded. The match at the Emirates Stadium will kick off Arsenal's title defence and mark Coventry's return to top-flight football after a quarter of a century.
