Tottenham's New Head Coach Roberto De Zerbi Addresses Backlash Over Mason Greenwood Comments

Roberto De Zerbi, the newly appointed head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, has publicly apologized for his previous remarks concerning Mason Greenwood. This apology comes in response to significant backlash from sections of the fanbase, who expressed concern over De Zerbi's characterization of Greenwood during his tenure at Marseille.

De Zerbi's Appointment and Immediate Challenges

De Zerbi has signed a five-year contract with Tottenham, stepping in to replace Igor Tudor, whose brief 44-day stint ended abruptly. The Italian manager inherits a team mired in a severe relegation struggle, with Spurs currently positioned just one point above the Premier League's bottom three. Despite his successful spells at Brighton and Marseille, De Zerbi's arrival at the north London club has been overshadowed by controversy stemming from his comments about Greenwood.

Controversial Remarks and Apology

In November of last year, while managing Marseille, De Zerbi described Greenwood as a 'good guy' who had 'paid a heavy price' for past allegations. Greenwood, the former Manchester United forward, faced charges in 2022 for attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault occasioning bodily harm against a woman. He denied all accusations, and the charges were dropped in February 2023 before trial. Greenwood subsequently joined Marseille, where he worked under De Zerbi.

Addressing the backlash on Thursday, De Zerbi stated, 'I have never wanted to downplay the issue of violence against women, or violence against anyone more broadly. In my life I have always stood up for those who are more vulnerable, more fragile. I've consistently fought and taken a stand to be on the side of those who are most at risk.' He emphasized his personal sensitivity to such matters, noting, 'I'm sorry if this offended anyone's feelings with this subject matter – I have a daughter and I'm very sensitive to these things, and I always have been.'

Focus on Tottenham's Relegation Battle

Looking ahead, De Zerbi is concentrating on Tottenham's critical fixtures to avoid relegation. He urged his team to play with courage and focus on each game individually. 'I think we have to be focused just on the Sunderland game,' he said. 'Game by game, we have to prepare the players to win the game and to be focused just on the game. We have to play with courage. We have to play with the qualities of the players.'

De Zerbi also reaffirmed his commitment to Tottenham, regardless of the season's outcome. 'I signed five years of contract because for me it is a big challenge and I will be the coach of Tottenham next season, no matter what,' he declared, signaling his long-term dedication to the club amidst the ongoing turmoil.
