Danny Murphy: Arsenal Are Champions League Favorites

Danny Murphy Declares Arsenal Champions League Favorites After Impressive Run

Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Danny Murphy has boldly named Arsenal as the probable favorites to win this season's UEFA Champions League. Murphy's assessment comes immediately after the Gunners secured their place in the quarter-finals with a commanding 3-1 aggregate victory over German side Bayer Leverkusen.

Arsenal's Defensive Solidity Earns High Praise

Speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy highlighted Arsenal's defensive organization as the primary reason for their elevated status in the competition. "The thing I love about them the most is their mindset in terms of how to defend, they don't carry anyone defensively," Murphy stated. "They are so good defensively, even when they're not playing well. They're the best team without the ball in Europe."

Murphy credited manager Mikel Arteta for instilling this relentless work ethic, noting that the Spanish coach "won't have anyone not doing their bit without the ball." This defensive foundation has been crucial for Arsenal, who remain the only undefeated team in this year's Champions League campaign.

Navigating a Favorable Draw Path

Beyond their defensive prowess, Murphy pointed to Arsenal's favorable side of the knockout draw as another significant factor. After dispatching Bayer Leverkusen, the Premier League leaders will face Portuguese champions Sporting CP in the quarter-finals.

Should they advance, Arsenal would then meet one of Barcelona, Newcastle United, Atletico Madrid, or Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-finals for a chance to reach the final at Budapest's Puskas Arena on May 30th. "They probably are favorites because of the side of the draw they're on," Murphy explained. "You'd expect them to get to the final."

Contrasting Domestic and European Prospects

Murphy offered a nuanced perspective on Arsenal's season objectives, separating their domestic cup ambitions from their European campaign. Regarding the upcoming Carabao Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley, Murphy described it as "a 50-50" contest that could be decided by "a moment of madness, a moment of magic."

However, he maintained that winning either the Premier League or the Champions League would constitute a successful season for Arteta's squad. "If Arsenal win either the Premier League or the Champions League then the season is a success," Murphy asserted. "They don't have to win both."

Individual Player Development Highlighted

The former England international also praised midfielder Eberechi Eze, whose spectacular 36th-minute strike against Bayer Leverkusen showcased what Murphy called "brilliant technique." Murphy noted Eze's significant development this season, particularly in his defensive responsibilities.

"He looks like he's willing to do it, he's very proactive with his defending now whereas he was very reactive before," Murphy observed, suggesting that being left out of the lineup after a difficult match against Aston Villa in December provided the player with "a little bit of a kick up the backside."

As Arsenal prepare for their quarter-final clash with Sporting CP, Murphy's endorsement adds to the growing belief that this could be the year the Gunners finally capture European football's most prestigious club trophy, a feat they haven't achieved in over two decades.
