Chris Powell, a 51-year-old cyclist, has died in hospital three days after being struck by a car in Stepney Green, East London. The incident occurred on Aylward Street at 11:15pm on Thursday, August 6, when a car traveling at high speed hit him from behind. Powell was rushed to hospital by paramedics but succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, August 9. His next of kin are being supported by specialist officers.
Suspect Charged and Remanded
Parvez Ahmed Rahman, 33, of Russia Lane in Bethnal Green, was charged on Friday, August 7 with attempted murder and failing to stop at the scene of a crash. He appeared at Thames Magistrates' Court the following day, where he was remanded into custody. Rahman is due to appear next at the Old Bailey on Friday, September 4.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card, leading the Met's investigation, said: “Our thoughts remain with Christopher's family and friends at this extremely difficult time. As we try to build up a full picture of the incident, we are appealing to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has any relevant information - particularly anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage.”
Authorities are urging anyone with information or footage that could assist the investigation to call 101 quoting CAD 8767/06AUG26. The incident has raised concerns about cyclist safety in the area, with local residents and cycling groups calling for increased road safety measures.
