Coronation Street star Gareth Pierce has teased a 'regeneration' for Todd Grimshaw following the traumatic events of the past year, promising fans a return to the character's witty and mischievous roots.
Todd's year of terror and tragedy
For nearly a year, Todd's life was a waking nightmare under the abusive control of his partner Theo Silverton (James Cartwright). Publicly, Theo appeared the perfect boyfriend, but privately he subjected Todd to relentless bullying, insults, and physical violence, driven by uncontrollable jealousy. The catalogue of abuses included leaving Todd's ex-boyfriend Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) to die in the Corriedale crash, forcing Todd into a shotgun wedding, and beating him so severely that he required hospital treatment.
Even after Todd ended the relationship, Theo refused to accept it, breaking into his flat and triggering a deadly confrontation that ended with Theo falling from rooftop scaffolding to his death on the Cobbles. However, Theo's demise only started a new ordeal for Todd: a murder investigation that placed him among six suspects, including his closest friends.
Murder mystery resolved, but trust shattered
Weeks of suspicion and paranoia followed until the truth emerged: the murderer was Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien), Todd's best friend and teenage sweetheart. The revelation was a devastating blow. Seeking respite, Todd departed Weatherfield for Thailand with fellow suspect Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) to visit his mother Eileen and brother Jason.
Now, as Todd returns from his travels, Pierce—who has played the role since October 2020—told Digital Spy that the character is entering a new phase. 'It's going to be about regeneration now. You don't want to stand still or feel that you're in any way defined by a longer storyline that you've carried. Now it's about what comes next, but you don't want to make it feel like you're forgetting that story and moving on.'
Humour and dark comedy return
Pierce hinted that the upcoming episodes will reintroduce Todd's trademark humour, which fans have missed. 'Hopefully what we're going to find out is how Todd navigates this next six months to a year. We're working to bring some of the humour back in as well. That was a real asset to the character and I love playing comedy too, so we're bringing that in.' He added that there will be 'comi-tragic' moments, reflecting the dark relationship Todd has just escaped: 'That's always interesting to me – I do like the grey and a bit of dark comedy.'
New romance on the horizon?
Pierce expressed hope that Todd might find love again, noting that his character's past with Billy and his observations of Billy and Paul's dedication could inspire him. 'I think so! From a personal perspective, as a guardian and advocate for Todd, then I would love him to have a happier time of it. But I'm also aware that a lot of our big stories are generated by less happy circumstances.'
He elaborated: 'I definitely do want to see Todd exploring the dating scene, because I think that's what we had leading up to the Theo relationship. It was a sense that maybe Todd was getting a little tired of a series of short-term relationships. Alongside that, he was seeing Billy and Paul going through something that was so, so hard – but also bonding them as a pair. It was really such a symbol of their love and dedication for each other.'
Pierce added: 'Because of Todd's history with Billy and his previous meddling in that relationship, I think that will have made him believe in love and maybe want something like that for himself. It also probably will have made him feel a bit sad about the way his dating life was going in that same period. Todd was looking for something more lasting, which was unfortunately a slight vulnerability in the early part of his relationship with Theo.'
What lies ahead for Todd?
Pierce concluded: 'So you will have a sense with Todd now saying 'I'm never going to let that happen to me again', but I think he's not going to give up hope of finding something lasting…'
