Coronation Street boss Kate Brooks has confirmed that Cassie Plummer's exit will be explosive and full of twists, as the character prepares to bid farewell to Weatherfield. The legendary Claire Sweeney, who plays Cassie, is leaving the cobbles after being cast as Miss Hannigan in the UK tour of musical Annie.
Murder Week and a Second Death
Murder week has erupted on the street, with five of Corrie's biggest villains in danger of being killed off. The rogues' gallery includes violent abuser Theo Silverton (James Cartwright), bunny-boiling baddie Jodie Ramsey (Olivia Frances-Brown), world's worst son Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard), predatory child groomer Megan Walsh (Beth Nixon), and killer landlady Maggie Driscoll (Pauline McLynn). While fans may not shed tears over these wrong'uns, actress Pauline McLynn recently teased that there may be a second death. If so, Cassie Plummer could be the one to go, sending shockwaves through the street.
Cassie's Transformation and Relationships
Since arriving on Coronation Street, Cassie has undergone a real transformation. She was determined to connect with her son Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) and overcome her drug addiction. With help from her family, she cleaned up her act and turned her life around, aside from a minor incident where she nearly killed Ken Barlow by lacing his drinks with drugs to keep her job as his carer. Recently, her relationship with long-term boyfriend Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) was tested when she planned to propose, but the proposal was put on ice after the death of Steve's father, Jim McDonald (Charles Lawson). At Jim's funeral, Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) sarcastically wondered who would attend Cassie's funeral, to which Cassie quipped it would be 'packed to the rafters', leaving fans worried this was a chilling portent.
Exit Involves Tyrone's Father
Cassie's exit will have a lot to do with Tyrone. A face from her past tests her relationship with Tyrone and Steve. Producer Kate Brooks revealed that Tyrone's father will come to Weatherfield in search of a better relationship with his son. 'As you know, Cassie's leaving us, and so it will contribute to her exit, which is going to be massive and quite explosive,' Kate teased. 'It'll be full of all the twists and turns that you can come to expect from an exit. He comes into the world of Fiz and Tyrone. Tyrone's in the mindset of, 'I'm in my 40s, I've survived this long without a dad.' The dad is very keen to connect with Tyrone.'
Kate also revealed that the return of Daddy Dobbs will not go down well with Cassie. 'Cassie is, needless to say, not happy that this guy has turned back up.' It remains to be seen whether Tyrone's dad will steal Cassie's heart away from Steve or if something far more sinister is about to happen.
