Summer Spellman is the new prime suspect in the murder of Theo Silverton on Coronation Street, with a shocking gun twist that leaves her future uncertain. The character, played by Harriet Bibby, has been implicated by an incriminating journal and was caught about to flee the cobbles.
Summer's Motive and the Incident
All suspects in Theo's murder had reasons to hate him, as he subjected partner Todd Grimshaw to abuse for nearly a year. Summer had an additional grudge: Theo left her adoptive father Billy Mayhew to die in the Corriedale crash. Determined to get justice, she even offered Billy's life insurance payout to conniving Carl Webster to provoke Theo into a confession, but the plan failed. Instead, Theo confronted Summer and taunted her about Billy's dying prayers.
On the night of the murder, Summer was searching Theo's flat when he appeared and advanced menacingly. Moments later, Theo was found dead on the cobbles, making Summer the last person to see him alive.
The Journal Discovery
While DS Kit Green focuses on Gary Windass as his prime suspect, suspicion soon shifts to Summer. George Shuttleworth accidentally knocks over Summer's bag and finds a page from her journal describing putting a gun to Theo's head. George and Christina Boyd read hate-filled passages about Theo, then are startled by Summer's return.
Harriet Bibby commented: 'I think she's definitely panicked. Everyone linked to Theo isn't thinking rationally. With this journal, she knows it looks really bad. Whether she's guilty or innocent, it implicates her.'
Police Questioning
As Summer's problems escalate, Kit spots a crucial detail in Lisa Swain's wedding photos that implicates Summer in Theo's murder. Lisa then takes Summer in for questioning. 'She's panicking,' said Harriet. 'There has never been a situation like this. She's thinking about Billy and what he would think. Sitting in a police station being questioned over murder is horrific.'
Later, George quizzes Summer about Theo's death, and a flashback reveals what he saw on the night. Could Summer really be the murderer? Harriet added: 'There's a scenario where she felt it was either her or him. Theo was very threatening, saying he would bury her. When pushed, people do what they need to survive.'
