Chelsea's £52m Investment Faces Another Setback with Gittens Injury
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has voiced his disappointment after the club's £52 million signing, Jamie Gittens, sustained a fresh injury during training, marking his third such setback this season. The 21-year-old forward, who joined Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund last summer on a seven-year contract, missed the FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale due to the issue.
Injury Details and Manager's Response
Rosenior confirmed that Gittens picked up what appears to be a hamstring injury in training ahead of the match. "It's a real shame for him; I think it's the third time it's happened," Rosenior stated after Chelsea's 7-0 victory over Port Vale. "We have to scan him and make sure. We need to help him and we need to make sure he's okay." When asked about a return timeline, Rosenior admitted, "I can't give you a time frame on that at the moment."
Gittens has struggled to establish himself at Chelsea this season, starting only five Premier League games and scoring one goal across all competitions. His arrival last summer raised eyebrows, as Chelsea already had a crowded attacking lineup and sold Noni Madueke to Arsenal in the same transfer window.
Chelsea's Recent Form and FA Cup Progress
Despite Gittens' absence, Chelsea delivered a dominant performance against Port Vale, securing a 7-0 win to advance to the FA Cup semi-finals. This victory comes after a challenging period for the club, which included back-to-back Premier League losses and an early Champions League exit to PSG before the international break.
Rosenior, who took over from Enzo Maresca in January, praised his team's attitude. "It's great, it's why you come to this club, you want to win trophies and you want to be in big games," he said. "I was really happy with the players. Their attitude was top. We scored seven goals and that came from an energy and intensity which I enjoyed."
Looking Ahead to Semi-Finals and Premier League
Chelsea will face Manchester City, Southampton, West Ham, or Leeds United in the FA Cup semi-finals. Manchester City defeated Liverpool 4-0, while Southampton caused an upset by beating Premier League leaders Arsenal. In the Premier League, Chelsea currently sit in sixth place and are set to host Manchester City next weekend.
Rosenior addressed speculation about his future amid the team's recent struggles, emphasizing focus on on-field performance. "Football is about football on the pitch," he remarked. "This is a huge club with a lot of scrutiny, a lot of people writing a lot of things. We had a really difficult 10 days but the way we came through is a really good step for the run-in."
