Chelsea are poised to alter their transfer approach significantly in a bid to secure Xabi Alonso as their next manager. The Blues are seeking a replacement for Liam Rosenior, who was dismissed after a brief 106-day tenure following Enzo Maresca's departure.
Alonso Emerges as Frontrunner
While candidates like Andoni Iraola, Oliver Glasner, and Marco Silva have been considered, Alonso has become the leading candidate. According to reports, unlike previous managers under the Clearlake regime, Alonso will have substantial influence over transfer decisions.
The club's strategy of recruiting young talents has yielded mixed results, and Alonso is expected to push for more experienced players to avoid the fate of predecessors like Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino. Although he won't have the final say, his opinions on targets will carry weight, and negotiations are expected to accelerate after Saturday's FA Cup final against Manchester City.
A source stated: 'Things should move quickly after the final. Chelsea ideally want an agreement with somebody within days, whether that be a few days or 10 days. But it shouldn't be a long process now.'
Overlooking Past Failures
Chelsea are willing to overlook Alonso's unsuccessful stint at Real Madrid, focusing instead on his achievements at Bayer Leverkusen, where he won a domestic double and reached a Europa League final. His potential arrival at Stamford Bridge surprises many who expected him to return to Liverpool.
Liverpool have shown little inclination to part with Arne Slot despite a poor title defense, highlighted by a 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa. Slot acknowledged fan skepticism but expressed confidence in improvement: 'I can understand at this moment of time that they don't have a lot of confidence... but I think then they are underestimating what a window can do, what a new start can do.'
Slot emphasized that injuries have hampered the team, noting that missing nine regular starters significantly impacts performance. He expects a better campaign next season with strategic additions and player development.
