Charlton Athletic Eye Birmingham's 'Supersub' Dykes as Coventry Rival Millwall for Esse
Charlton keen on Birmingham striker Dykes in January window

Charlton Athletic are actively pursuing reinforcements in the January transfer window, with a reported interest in Birmingham City's experienced striker Lyndon Dykes. The Addicks' search for attacking options comes despite a recent upturn in form from summer signing Charlie Kelman.

Addicks Target Proven Championship Scorer

According to The Daily Record, Charlton are 'keen' on securing a deal for the 30-year-old Scottish forward. Lyndon Dykes boasts a wealth of second-tier experience, having scored 37 goals in 177 Championship appearances throughout his career.

Dykes moved to Birmingham City in the summer of 2024 but found goals hard to come by in his first season, netting just once in 25 League One outings. This term, he has been utilised primarily as an impact substitute by the Blues, starting only two matches but earning a reputation as a 'supersub' for his ability to influence games. He has scored twice in the league so far this season.

Charlton manager Nathan Jones recently emphasised the club's transfer efforts, telling reporter Richard Cawley: "I'm sleeping at the training ground and we're doing 15 hours a day. We cannot do any more to get people in. We know exactly who we want - we have enquired about other players."

Coventry Enter Race for Former Millwall Starlet

In a separate transfer storyline, Coventry City have emerged as contenders for the signature of Crystal Palace winger Romain Esse. The 20-year-old had previously been linked with a return to his former club, Millwall, on a short-term loan deal.

Esse left The Den for the Premier League side a year ago but has struggled for consistent game time. His prospects have diminished further following Palace's signing of Brennan Johnson. Before his move, Esse registered four goals and an assist in the Championship for Millwall and scored on his Palace debut against Brentford last season.

The Telegraph reports that Coventry, who are among the favourites for the Championship title, are interested in bringing Esse back to the second tier. Alex Neil's side has dealt with injuries to wide players, including key man Femi Azeez, making the potential loan move a logical one. Other unnamed Championship clubs are also said to be 'interested'.

Context for Charlton's Search

Charlton's interest in Dykes follows an important 2-2 draw away at Blackburn Rovers last weekend, where Charlie Kelman scored his first brace for the club. The former QPR striker now has three league goals since returning from injury at the end of December 2025, but the Addicks are still looking to bolster their attacking ranks this month.

The January window is now in full swing, with clubs across the Championship looking to gain an edge for the second half of the season. The potential moves for both Dykes and Esse highlight the competitive nature of the market as teams aim to strengthen their squads.
