Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has delivered a scathing response to Curtis Jones' emotional interview following the team's humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven at Anfield.
Liverpool's Defensive Collapse Continues
The defending Premier League champions suffered their second heavy home defeat in just five days, marking another deeply worrying performance under manager Arne Slot. This disappointing result came after Saturday's 3-0 thrashing by Nottingham Forest, with Dutch side PSV running riot on Wednesday night to secure a comprehensive victory.
Wednesday's defeat represents Liverpool's ninth loss in 12 games and their third consecutive defeat by a three-goal margin, marking the club's worst run of form in 71 years.
Jones' Passionate Plea for Change
In a frank interview with Irish broadcaster RTE following the match, midfielder Curtis Jones admitted Liverpool 'are in the s**t and it needs to change'. Speaking to CBS Sports, the local player blasted his team's lack of fight and intensity.
'It's got to be on me and the rest of the lads to change this around to not be so nice where teams are coming here thinking, "we're gonna win here and score two, three, four goals,"' Jones stated.
The midfielder lamented how Anfield has lost its fear factor, adding: 'This used to be a place that you hated to come – with the fans and how we're going to play and how we're going to press and be absolute dogs. Now we hardly even play. There's times where we do play but off the ball stuff… I think that is the stuff that has to change.'
Carragher's Brutal Dismissal
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who also suggested Arne Slot's position as manager is becoming 'untenable', showed little sympathy for Jones' reasoning. The Sky Sports pundit insisted nothing is preventing the players from working harder on the pitch.
'Curtis Jones is not young anymore actually, he's a local player, he's passionate and he is obviously hurting right now and he has given an interview that will probably go everywhere,' Carragher commented.
He expressed his preference for more senior players to address the media, stating: 'I would have loved to see Mo Salah speaking there instead of Curtis Jones coming out. But when he is saying, we need to put a tackle in, we need to get closer to the ball, who is stopping you?'
Carragher delivered his most cutting remark by emphasising: 'The only thing in football someone can't stop you doing is running. It might not happen with the ball, or the ability or the quality or people have lost confidence. But no one can stop you tackling, running and pressing. So when he is saying we are not doing it, why aren't they, then? Just do it. Don't tell us you are not doing it or you are going to do it in the next game. Just do it.'
The pundit's comments highlight the growing frustration surrounding Liverpool's dramatic decline, with the team's current form raising serious questions about both player commitment and managerial leadership at Anfield.
