Jos Buttler and Harry Brook produced a record-breaking partnership as England posted 257 for three, the highest total ever against India in T20 internationals, to seal a 4-0 series victory with a 56-run win in the fifth match.
Record partnership and highest total
Buttler smashed 131 off 64 balls, the second-highest score by an England batter in T20s, while Brook remained unbeaten on 95. Their 233-run partnership is England's best in the format, the best against India by a margin of 59 runs, and the fifth-highest in all T20 cricket. England's total of 257 for three broke the record they set in Mumbai in March for the highest score against India.
India's ragged fielding
India's fielding was described as ragged and puzzling, with both Buttler and Brook dropped early. Buttler was on 101 when Suryansh Shedge put down an easy chance at deep midwicket, while Brook survived when Shivam Dube misjudged a catch at deep third, allowing the ball to fall to earth. Brook then hit the next two balls for six. Buttler was dropped again in the final over by Ishan Kishan.
India's chase falls short
India kept pace early, reaching 110 for two at the halfway stage, one run fewer and one wicket more than England. However, Shreyas Iyer miscued the first ball after drinks, and the required rate climbed. Half-centuries from Ishan Kishan (56 off 35) and Tilak Varma (53 off 25) prevented humiliation, but India finished on 201 for eight, losing by 56 runs.
Series context
England's series win marks a turnaround after a humbling run of defeats across formats. India, who had been top of the ICC T20 rankings since February 2022, have been usurped by England after two World Cup wins and 1,601 days at the summit.
