Nicky Butt Backs Michael Carrick for Permanent Manchester United Managerial Role
Former Manchester United and England midfielder Nicky Butt has publicly endorsed Michael Carrick as the leading candidate to assume the permanent managerial position at Old Trafford. Butt's assessment comes amid ongoing speculation regarding the club's long-term leadership following Ruben Amorim's dismissal earlier this year.
Carrick's Impressive Interim Tenure
Michael Carrick stepped into the caretaker manager role in January after Darren Fletcher briefly oversaw two matches. At that time, Manchester United were struggling in sixth place in the Premier League, having secured only one victory in their previous seven matches across all competitions.
Carrick's immediate impact was nothing short of remarkable. He guided the team to consecutive victories over fierce rivals Manchester City and Arsenal, sparking an impressive seven-match unbeaten streak. Although the team faced a setback with a defeat against a ten-man Newcastle United at St James' Park, they quickly recovered with a win against Aston Villa and a draw at Bournemouth before the international break.
These results have propelled Manchester United to third place in the Premier League table, positioning them strongly for Champions League qualification for the first time since their group-stage exit in 2023.
Butt's Rationale for Carrick's Appointment
Despite Carrick's success, the club's hierarchy has yet to confirm his future, leaving room for ongoing conjecture about potential successors. However, Nicky Butt believes the apparent absence of viable elite-level managers makes Carrick the obvious choice.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Butt elaborated on his perspective. "The thing with the Michael scenario is that it's all well and good people saying that he's not quite ready for the job, and I get that side of the argument as well," Butt stated. "But for me, if you're asking me the question, if you don't give it to Michael then who are you giving it to? There's nobody I can think of that is jumping out, going: that's the man."
Butt emphasized Carrick's familiarity with the club and his manageable demeanor as key advantages. "So that's why I think Michael will get it. He's doing a good job, he knows the football club. Even more importantly, I think the people above him will like working with Michael, he's not going to cause them too much of a headache, he's not going to start being a Jose Mourinho. He's the easy choice."
Butt also ruled out several high-profile candidates, noting that Julian Nagelsmann, Thomas Tuchel, and Carlo Ancelotti are unlikely options. "So there's nobody there in my eyes going, 'Well you've got to take him!'... it's not like a Jose Mourinho or a Jurgen Klopp has become available."
Scholes Weighs In with Cautious Optimism
Paul Scholes, Butt's former teammate and podcast co-host, initially criticized Carrick's management but has since acknowledged his improved standing. Scholes agrees that Carrick may be the best available option, though he highlights the need for long-term evaluation.
"I think he's put himself in a much better position," Scholes explained. "The big question will be the start of next season, the first ten or 15 games of next year, when you have to win games, you have to put yourself in a position: Champions League, the league, that's when it becomes a proper job."
Scholes believes Carrick possesses the necessary composure to handle potential future challenges. "Sometimes managers just look right and just looking at Michael, the way he handles himself, not so much the way he dresses, but he just looks right. He's unflappable now because everything's going alright... I think Michael can handle it."
Carrick's Focused Approach Amid Speculation
Michael Carrick has consistently downplayed discussions about his future, maintaining a calm and focused demeanor. Following Manchester United's 3-1 victory over Aston Villa last month, Carrick told reporters, "I'm in this position at the moment, doing the best I can, and I'm loving it, obviously. But whatever's going to happen is going happen. It's all pretty calm."
As Manchester United prepare for their upcoming Premier League clash against bitter rivals Leeds United, Carrick has organized an intensive training camp in Dublin. A 25-man squad has been selected for the trip, featuring the return of Lisandro Martinez and Patrick Dorgu from injuries, though Diogo Dalot and Tom Heaton are absent due to illness, and Matthijs de Ligt remains sidelined with a back injury.
The remainder of the season presents critical fixtures against Chelsea, Brentford, Liverpool, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, and Brighton, which will further test Carrick's managerial capabilities and potentially solidify his case for the permanent role.
