Brighton & Hove Albion delivered a statement performance on the opening day of the Premier League season, thrashing Aston Villa 4-0 at the Amex Stadium. Jack Hinshelwood scored twice in a first-half onslaught, while new signing João Gomes was sent off for violent conduct, compounding a miserable afternoon for Unai Emery's side.
First-half blitz leaves Villa stunned
Brighton took control from the outset, with Maxim De Cuyper forcing an own goal from Victor Lindelöf to open the scoring. The hosts added three more before the interval, with De Cuyper scoring himself and Hinshelwood netting twice. The damage could have been worse, as Brighton hit the post twice and had a goal disallowed for offside in the second half.
Aston Villa's woes were compounded by the sending-off of João Gomes in the 40th minute, just four minutes after coming on as a debutant. The Brazilian midfielder aimed a high boot at Brighton striker Georginio Rutter, and after a video assistant referee review, was shown a straight red card.
Villa's summer exodus takes its toll
Unai Emery's side were without several key players, including Ollie Watkins, who was not in the match-day squad amid interest from Al-Hilal. With Brian Madjo and Tammy Abraham injured, Emiliano Buendía was pressed into emergency service as a centre-forward. Emiliano Martínez is also set to leave, and marquee signing Johan Manzambi is still not fit.
Brighton, too, had their own absentees, with Carlos Baleba and Yankuba Minteh missing due to injuries, although their proposed moves to Manchester United and Liverpool respectively were reportedly a factor. Kaoru Mitoma was out with a fitness issue.
Brighton's tactical masterclass
Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler named three centre-halves but opted to start Olivier Boscagli at left-back, allowing De Cuyper to push forward. The decision paid off, as De Cuyper was involved in three of the four goals. Brighton's pressing was relentless, winning tackle after tackle, and their finishing was ruthless.
The fourth goal came from a turnover, with Yasin Ayari robbing Gomes on the edge of the Villa area to set up Hinshelwood for a simple finish. Gomes, who had been booked earlier for dissent, was spared a second yellow for a foul on Ayari before his red card.
Emery's frustrations boil over
Emery made no substitutions until the 74th minute, a possible message to the Villa board about the squad's depth. He left the pitch without shaking Hürzeler's hand, his frustration evident. Brighton substitute Costinha hit the post with his first touch, and Charalampos Kostoulas had a goal disallowed for offside.
The result marks a strong start for Brighton, who showed they can cope with the loss of key players, while Villa face an uncertain season ahead with several stars linked with exits and a mounting injury list.
