Brighton Stun Manchester City 3-2 in WSL Title Race Twist
Brighton Stun Man City 3-2 in WSL Title Race

Manchester City's Women's Super League title charge suffered a major setback as Brighton & Hove Albion secured a stunning 3-2 victory at the Broadfield Stadium. Goals from Madison Haley and Kiko Seike overturned an early deficit, putting City's championship celebrations on hold.

City's Fast Start Fails to Pay Off

City could have taken control of the title race with a win, potentially securing the trophy as early as Wednesday if Arsenal lost to Leicester. However, despite a dominant start, they failed to capitalise on their chances. Within 10 seconds, Moeka Minami's terrible backpass was intercepted by Khadija Shaw, who set up Aoba Fujino, but the Japanese midfielder fired wide.

Brighton's defensive frailties continued, and in the fifth minute, a panicked clearance from Caitlin Hayes fell to Kerolin. The Brazilian took a quick touch before smashing her strike into the top-left corner to give City the lead.

Brighton Fight Back

City continued to create opportunities, with Lauren Hemp going close and Shaw hitting the post. But as they wasted chances, Brighton grew into the game. On the stroke of half-time, Fran Kirby's clever flick-on set up Madison Haley, who slotted home the equaliser.

The turnaround was complete just two minutes after the restart. Another superb through ball from Kirby found Kiko Seike, who drilled her shot past Ayaka Yamashita from a tight angle to put Brighton ahead.

Haley Seals the Win

City struggled to respond, while Brighton made the most of their chances. Haley completed her first WSL double after receiving a short pass from Seike in the area. Her initial shot was saved by Yamashita, but the ball deflected upwards, allowing her to head home the rebound.

With time running out, City pushed forward desperately, moving Rebecca Knaak from centre-back to centre-forward. Their gamble paid off when Shaw latched onto a pass from Iman Beney and placed her shot into the bottom corner, but it was too little, too late.

Title Race Wide Open

The defeat leaves City's title hopes in the balance. Reigning champions Chelsea could close the gap to six points with a win over Everton on Sunday, while Arsenal, with three games in hand, have renewed optimism. The race could now go down to the final day on 16 May.
