Brighton & Hove Albion have completed the signing of Croatia defender Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham Hotspur for a club-record fee of £46 million. The 19-year-old has agreed a five-year contract with the Seagulls, effectively replacing Jan Paul van Hecke, who moved to Spurs for £52 million last month.
Impressive loan spell at Hamburg
Vuskovic spent last season on loan at Hamburg in the Bundesliga, where he made 30 appearances and scored six goals. His performances have drawn praise from Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler, who said: “Last season he demonstrated he can play at a very high level and we want to help him build on that within our environment. There’s been a lot of external noise about Luka joining us, but he is still a young guy who will need time to adjust to the demands of playing for Brighton and the Premier League. We are confident that he will take this in his stride though.”
International experience
The teenager has already represented Croatia at senior level, featuring once at the 2022 World Cup when he started in a 4-2 defeat to England. Despite limited game time at Tottenham, where his path was blocked by the arrivals of Van Hecke and Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth, Vuskovic is highly regarded and seen as a key investment for Brighton's future.
Brighton's record signing
The £46 million fee surpasses Brighton's previous record, underlining the club's ambition to compete at the highest level. Vuskovic joined Tottenham from Hajduk Split last year but has now made the move to the south coast, where he will look to establish himself in the Premier League.
