David Beckham Challenges Thomas Tuchel on World Cup Squad Decision
Football icon David Beckham has openly expressed disagreement with England manager Thomas Tuchel over the exclusion of star player Trent Alexander-Arnold from the national team's World Cup preparations. This clash of opinions emerges as Tuchel aims to build on Sir Gareth Southgate's legacy and secure England's first World Cup victory since 1966.
Tuchel's Squad Selection Sparks Controversy
In March 2026, Tuchel named an expanded 35-man squad for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, using these matches as a final assessment before the World Cup. The squad included uncapped players like Everton midfielder James Garner and Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele, alongside recalls for Manchester United's Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo, and AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori, who last played in 2023.
However, the omission of Real Madrid star Trent Alexander-Arnold, formerly of Liverpool, drew significant attention. Tuchel described it as a tough decision, stating, I know what Trent can give us and I decided still to stick to the players with us. I know it's difficult to leave out a player like Trent. We spoke on the phone and I explained the situation. He must accept it. It's a sporting decision.
Beckham's Strong Stance on Alexander-Arnold
Beckham, in an interview with talkSPORT, revealed he would find it very hard not to include Alexander-Arnold in the World Cup squad. He said, That's why I'm not England manager, because I don't have to make those decisions! But, I'm a massive fan of Trent, I love Trent as a player. Beckham compared Alexander-Arnold to legendary defender Roberto Carlos, noting, Roberto Carlos was an unbelievable defender, but he was also unbelievable going forward. With Trent, would I take him? I'd find it very hard not to take someone like Trent.
He acknowledged Tuchel's perspective, adding, But then Thomas, he's come out and said, I think I read it this morning, that there are other players that are ahead of him at the moment. But he said 'at the moment', so that could change. Beckham suggested that the upcoming friendlies might influence final squad decisions, indicating Tuchel is still considering Alexander-Arnold.
Reactions and England's World Cup Outlook
Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney also criticized the decision, calling it incredible and suggesting there might be no way back for the 27-year-old Alexander-Arnold. England's recent 1-1 draw with Uruguay and upcoming match against Japan are critical for Tuchel's evaluation process.
England is placed in Group L for the World Cup, starting their campaign against Croatia on June 17, followed by matches against Ghana and Panama. Tuchel, initially expected to lead only until the World Cup, recently signed a contract extension through Euro 2028, underscoring long-term plans for the team.
This debate highlights the intense scrutiny and high stakes involved in squad selection for major tournaments, with Beckham's intervention adding a prominent voice to the discussion.
