The BBC has officially cancelled Football Focus, the iconic Saturday lunchtime programme that has been a staple of British television for 52 years. The show, which first aired in 1974 with Bob Wilson as host, provided interviews, analysis, and stories ahead of the weekend's football fixtures. It was most recently presented by former Arsenal and England defender Alex Scott, who took over from Dan Walker in 2021.
Declining Viewership and Digital Shift
The BBC attributed the decision to a gradual decline in television viewing figures since 2018, as audiences increasingly turn to digital platforms for pre-match content. The show's audience dropped from 957,000 in the 2019-20 season to 687,000 three years later, with a minor uptick to 739,000 last season. In a statement, the BBC noted that 'changing audience behaviours mean fans are now increasingly consuming football content in different ways and we need to respond appropriately as we face difficult decisions around how the licence fee is spent.'
Replacement Programme
The 12:45pm slot on BBC One on Saturdays will be taken next season by The Football Interview, a new show where presenter Kelly Somers will interview top names in football. Alex Kay-Jelski, director of BBC Sport, commented: 'Football Focus has been a hugely important programme in the history of BBC Sport and has played a key role in telling the stories of the game for generations of viewers. This decision was made before last week’s wider BBC savings announcement, reflecting the continued shift in how audiences engage with football and our commitment to evolving how we deliver content to reach fans wherever they are.'
