Australia Urged to Step In as Emergency Host for 2027 AFC Asian Cup
Australia has been called upon to offer itself as an emergency host for the men's 2027 AFC Asian Cup, as escalating conflict in the Middle East raises serious doubts about whether Saudi Arabia can safely proceed with the tournament scheduled to begin in January. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) recently postponed the tournament draw, originally set for Riyadh, citing concerns over stakeholder attendance, with no new date announced despite the event being just eight months away.
Uncertainty Over Saudi Arabia's Hosting Capabilities
The 2027 Asian Cup is planned to run for four weeks from January 7, featuring 24 teams including the Socceroos across venues in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Khobar. However, security risks in the Persian Gulf region have prompted discussions within football circles about potential alternative hosts. Saudi Arabia, which won hosting rights in 2023 and is also set to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, faces challenges as it has been drawn into regional conflicts and targeted by Iranian counterattacks.
One venue under construction, Aramco Stadium in Khobar, is located merely 200 kilometers from Iran and an hour's drive from Bahrain, which has experienced recent attacks despite ceasefires. This precarious situation has led AFC officials to contemplate backup arrangements to ensure the tournament's continuity.
Craig Foster Advocates for Australian Hosting Bid
Former Socceroo Craig Foster has publicly urged the Australian government to support Football Australia in offering to host the tournament at short notice. Foster emphasized that Australia is uniquely positioned due to its proven track record, having successfully hosted the 2015 men's Asian Cup and the recent Women's Asian Cup. "We have the demonstrated capability, it is an important diplomatic opportunity at a time when Australia's reputation in the Middle East is severely diminished, and it would be a welcome economic boost for the hospitality industry across the country," Foster stated.
He highlighted that hosting would not only provide a diplomatic and economic lift but also enhance the Socceroos' chances of success with supportive home crowds. Foster called on Australia's Minister for Sport, Anika Wells, to actively back Football Australia's potential emergency bid.
Economic and Logistical Considerations
Hosting the 2027 Asian Cup would involve significant costs for Australian taxpayers. Contributions for the Women's Asian Cup from the federal government and hosting states—New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia—exceeded $20 million. An economic assessment of the 2015 tournament revealed that 15,000 overseas tourists contributed over half of the $81 million in direct expenditure.
A federal government spokesperson noted that they continue to collaborate with Football Australia to support the growth of football in Australia, with investments in international sporting events considered through budget processes. Football Australia has previously expressed interest in hosting the 2031 and 2035 editions, though that process is currently on hold.

A spokesperson for Football Australia acknowledged that AFC tournaments have become major global events, thanks to capabilities demonstrated by nations like Saudi Arabia. They emphasized that locally-hosted events deliver "substantial economic, diplomatic, social, and health value for Australia." However, maintaining Australia's status as a leading host nation requires sustained and coordinated government support to meet the increasing scale and expectations of global football competitions.
