Australia Dominate Pakistan in World Cup Opener
Australia began their Women's T20 World Cup campaign with a commanding eight-wicket victory over Pakistan at Newlands, Cape Town, on Friday. Pakistan, put in to bat, could only manage 92 for nine in their 20 overs, with Australia cruising to 93 for two in 11.2 overs.
Alyssa Healy anchored the chase with an unbeaten 52 off 40 balls, hitting eight fours and a six. Captain Meg Lanning contributed 20 before being dismissed by Nida Dar. Healy and Beth Mooney (18 not out) added an unbroken 48-run stand for the third wicket to seal the win.
Pakistan Batting Struggles
Pakistan's innings never gained momentum after losing opener Muneeba Ali for a duck in the first over. Captain Bismah Maroof top-scored with 34 off 35 balls, but wickets fell regularly. Nida Dar made 18 and Omaima Sohail 14, but no other batter reached double figures.
Australian bowlers shared the wickets, with Megan Schutt taking 2 for 13, Darcie Brown 2 for 11, and Jess Jonassen 2 for 14. Ashleigh Gardner also claimed 1 for 12.
Clinical Performance by Australia
Australia's fielding was sharp, with two run-outs and a stumping. Healy's innings was particularly aggressive, as she reached her half-century off 37 balls. The defending champions look in formidable form as they seek a seventh T20 World Cup title.
"It was a good start to the tournament," said Healy. "We wanted to put pressure on them early, and the bowlers did a great job. The pitch was a bit two-paced, but we adapted well."
Group A Standings
The win puts Australia top of Group A, while Pakistan will need to bounce back in their next match against India. Australia next face Sri Lanka on Monday.
