Arteta Under Pressure to Shake Up Arsenal Defence After Cup Disasters
Mikel Arteta has been advised to make a bold defensive change by dropping star centre-back William Saliba for teammate Riccardo Calafiori, as Arsenal's once-promising season teeters on the brink of collapse. The Gunners, who were competing for a historic treble just two weeks ago, have suffered consecutive cup defeats that have sent shockwaves through the club.
Arsenal's Trophy Hopes Dashed in Dramatic Fashion
Arsenal's quest for silverware has hit a major roadblock, with a 2-0 loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley followed by a shocking 2-1 FA Cup exit at the hands of Championship side Southampton. These back-to-back losses mark the first time this season that Arteta's side has suffered such a setback, casting doubt on their ability to finish the campaign strongly.
Despite these setbacks, Arsenal still have much to play for. They hold a commanding nine-point lead over Manchester City in the Premier League, though City have a game in hand and a crucial head-to-head clash at the Etihad Stadium looming later this month. Additionally, the Gunners are through to the Champions League quarter-finals after an impressive group stage and a last-16 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, with a tie against Sporting Lisbon set to begin on Tuesday night.
Materazzi's Controversial Call for Calafiori Over Saliba
In the wake of these defeats, World Cup-winning defender Marco Materazzi has publicly urged Arteta to bench Saliba in favour of Riccardo Calafiori. Materazzi, a former Italy international, believes that Calafiori—who joined Arsenal in 2024 for £42 million and has often been deployed at left-back—should be given the nod at centre-back alongside Gabriel.
'I think Riccardo Calafiori is one of the best Italian defenders right now,' Materazzi stated in an interview. 'He grew very fast at Bologna, and now Arsenal must believe in him. For me, Calafiori is best at centre-back. Arsenal should play him with Gabriel instead of William Saliba. He has a very good left foot.'
This recommendation comes despite Saliba's stellar reputation. The French defender has been nearly flawless over the past four years and is widely regarded as one of the world's top centre-backs. Rio Ferdinand, a Premier League legend, has even predicted that Saliba will become the best defender in the world once Virgil van Dijk retires.
Gabriel's Ballon d'Or Prospects and Arsenal's Path Forward
Materazzi also touched on the potential for Gabriel to contend for the Ballon d'Or, noting that while it is rare for a defender to win the award, exceptional performances could change that. 'If Gabriel keeps scoring goals and wins some trophies for Arsenal, then why not?' he remarked, referencing Fabio Cannavaro as the last defender to achieve the feat.
As Arsenal look to regroup, their immediate focus shifts to the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Sporting. Following that, they will resume their Premier League campaign against Bournemouth after a one-month break. The decisions Arteta makes in the coming weeks could define not only this season but also the long-term trajectory of his squad.
The pressure is mounting on Arteta to navigate this crisis and deliver the club's first Premier League title since 2004, along with a maiden Champions League trophy. Whether he heeds Materazzi's advice or sticks with his trusted defensive partnership remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Arsenal's season is at a critical juncture.
