Mikel Arteta Addresses Eberechi Eze Injury Ahead of Arsenal's FA Cup Match

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has offered an update on the fitness of midfielder Eberechi Eze, confirming that the player will be unavailable for the FA Cup clash against Southampton at St Mary's Stadium. The 27-year-old has been sidelined since mid-March due to a calf injury, which also caused him to miss the Carabao Cup final and recent England international friendlies.

Eze's Absence and Arteta's Uncertainty

Eze, who joined Arsenal from Crystal Palace last summer for £67.5 million, has been a crucial figure this season, contributing nine goals and six assists across all competitions. His standout performances in North London derbies against Tottenham Hotspur have highlighted his importance to the team. However, Arteta expressed uncertainty about the timeline for Eze's return, stating, "Ebs is out. With Ebs I cannot put a finger [on how long he'll be out], I don't know, because he's a special character."

This injury comes at a critical juncture for Arsenal, who face a busy schedule including a Champions League quarter-final against Sporting Lisbon and a Premier League trip to Manchester City after the Southampton match.

Arteta Dismisses Injury Controversy

Arteta also addressed skepticism surrounding Arsenal's recent injury withdrawals during the international break, where nearly half of the Premier League players who pulled out were from the Gunners. With Arsenal competing for the Premier League title, questions arose about the severity of these injuries. Arteta defended the club's integrity, emphasizing their transparent communication with national teams.

He explained, "We have very good relationships and communication with most of the national teams. We've been extremely supportive all the time. When you have to communicate the state and the moment of every player, we are always very honest. In the end, there was a medical decision that has to be made. It was clear what the conclusion was."

Arteta further stressed that Arsenal supports players representing their national teams when fit, adding, "When a player is fit and available, he has to play. It makes us very proud that we have that many players in the national team and the players are desperate to play with the national team. We are fully supportive of that."

Other Injury News and Team Updates

In more positive news, Arteta revealed that winger Noni Madueke's knee injury is less severe than initially feared, with only a short recovery period expected. Additionally, Martin Odegaard and Jurrien Timber are "in contention" to feature in the Southampton match, providing a boost to the squad depth.

As Arsenal prepares for this FA Cup encounter, the focus remains on navigating injury challenges while maintaining their competitive edge in multiple competitions.
