Arsenal Women have completed a major squad overhaul with seven new signings, including England midfielder Georgia Stanway, as the club sets its sights on a first Women's Super League title since 2019. The revamp follows the departures of key players Beth Mead and Katie McCabe, with technical director Jodie Taylor emphasizing the need for change to compete at the highest level.
Stanway's immediate commitment
Stanway, who joined from Bayern Munich, wasted no time in showing her dedication. On the first day of pre-season, she revealed a tattoo of the lyric "whatever the weather" from Arsenal's anthem, North London Forever. "It shows I'm going to give absolutely everything for this club," she said. "I want to hit the ground running, play my game, connect with my teammates, connect with the fans."
The 27-year-old midfielder, covered in tattoos, sees them as a creative outlet. "I only see the bare skin, the space, so I need to keep collecting more," she said. Her unveiling video highlighted the tattoo, a bold statement before even stepping onto the Emirates pitch.
Academy graduates hold the core
While new arrivals bring energy, academy graduate Lotte Wubben-Moy represents the club's enduring culture. The lifelong Arsenal fan, who joined at age 13, is determined to secure a starting spot after struggling for consistent minutes. "I've always felt ready," said Wubben-Moy. "When I get my moment, I deliver. Historically, we're built on defensive solidity. I want my spot."
Wubben-Moy praised Stanway's all-in attitude: "She has set a very high bar. That's Georgia. She goes all in and I like that." The defender emphasized the team's adaptability: "Change is inevitable in women's football. We've become a nimble team that can move with the ebb and flow."
Strategic recruitment drive
Taylor, appointed technical director in January, acknowledged the challenges of the transfer market. "The pool of elite talent is small and several clubs are fishing from it," she said. "We try to plan, but we also have to be reactive. We talk about positional needs, ages, and succession planning, but if a player's not available, it's like fitting square pegs into round holes."
The new signings include experienced internationals Selina Çerçi, Géraldine Reuteler, Ona Batlle, and Misa Rodríguez, as well as young talents Lisa Baum and Isabella Damm. With no major international tournament this summer, the coaching staff has a full pre-season to integrate the squad.
Title ambitions clear
Arsenal's average attendance of over 34,000 for WSL games at the Emirates last season underscores the club's pulling power. Taylor was unequivocal about the target: "We want to win the league. We are an ambitious club and with the signings we've made we feel like we're in a great place to do that."
Wubben-Moy likened the squad-building to cooking: "It's like you're cooking the most beautiful recipe and then you add the final small ingredients that make the marginal difference. We're in the process now with a beautiful long pre-season. I'm desperate to get it out of the way so we can serve what we're cooking to the fans."
