Sam Allardyce Urges Harry Maguire to Reconsider England World Cup Participation
Former England manager Sam Allardyce has made a surprising recommendation to Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, suggesting he should consider rejecting an England call-up for the upcoming World Cup. This advice comes in response to what Allardyce describes as "harsh" comments from current Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel regarding Maguire's position in the national team.
Tuchel's Critical Assessment of Maguire's Role
The controversy stems from Tuchel's recent statements about the 33-year-old defender, who was included in England's expanded 35-man squad last week and started in Friday's 1-1 draw against Uruguay. While Maguire expressed clear enthusiasm about his recall with a joyful "back with the lads" Instagram post from St George's Park, Tuchel's subsequent comments painted a less optimistic picture of the defender's prospects.
Tuchel explained his approach to the pre-World Cup camp, stating: "This is the last camp before the trip to the US, so it's also my final chance to get to know new players, to learn about them and see how they fit in. Harry isn't a new player in an England shirt, of course, but he's new to me in this camp."
The England manager emphasized his intention to observe Maguire's interactions with teammates and assess his capabilities before making final decisions about the World Cup squad.
Maguire's Position in Tuchel's Defensive Hierarchy
Following England's draw with Uruguay, Tuchel was particularly candid about Maguire's standing in his defensive plans, revealing that the Manchester United player currently ranks as his fifth-choice center-back for the World Cup. Assessing Maguire's performance, Tuchel noted: "I got exactly what I thought, solid, solid central-defender play. That's what he does. Very good on the ball, very calm, strong in the air and a weapon for set-pieces."
However, Tuchel clarified his preference for other defenders, stating: "I haven't changed my mind, but I see other players I like to start for us, I see other players ahead with a different profile. I see Ezri Konsa ahead, I see Marc Guehi ahead. It's no secret. I see Trevoh Chalobah on the level of mobility was slightly ahead of him."
The England manager did acknowledge Maguire's potential value in tournament situations, particularly in defending leads or chasing games with crosses, long throw-ins, and set-pieces.
Allardyce's Strong Reaction to Tuchel's Comments
Allardyce, who briefly managed England in 2016, expressed strong disagreement with Tuchel's approach, telling Footy Accumulators: "It's a bit harsh. Harry endured such a difficult time at Manchester United when the club tried to belittle him – especially the manager at the time. He's lost his captaincy, his place in the England squad, and has been criticized so heavily in the last few years."
The former manager highlighted Maguire's resilience, noting that the defender has "taken every criticism on the chin and is proving everyone wrong." Allardyce then offered his surprising advice: "If I was in Harry's position, I'd reconsider going with the camp at all. Perhaps to his own detriment, Harry has said that Tuchel's comments would cause no problem. It makes you wonder whether he's too nice!"
Ferdinand's Perspective on the Situation
Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand has also weighed in on the controversy, suggesting that Tuchel's comments could be perceived as insulting to Maguire. Ferdinand stated on his YouTube channel: "I think Harry Maguire will take that as an insult in some respect. He will be sitting there and think, 'hold on a minute, I'm more than this.' In Tuchel's eyes, he uses the word mobility. Other guys have more. I get what he's saying. No one has to agree with it."
Maguire's England Career and World Cup Context
Harry Maguire has earned 65 caps for England since making his international debut under Sir Gareth Southgate in 2017. The current controversy emerges as England prepares for their World Cup campaign, where they will attempt to win only their second World Cup title. England's Group L campaign begins against Croatia on June 17, followed by matches against Ghana and Panama as they seek to advance to the knockout stages and ultimately claim their first World Cup victory since 1966.
The situation raises important questions about player-manager relationships, squad selection transparency, and how public comments about players' roles can impact team dynamics ahead of major tournaments. As the World Cup approaches, all eyes will be on whether Maguire accepts Allardyce's surprising advice or continues his England journey despite Tuchel's reservations about his starting role.
