Alfie Barbeary, the dynamic England international, has spoken candidly about his departure from Bath Rugby and his new chapter with Bordeaux-Bègles in the Champions Cup. The 24-year-old back-row forward, known for his explosive power and versatility, made the move to the French Top 14 side at the end of the 2023-24 season, a decision that surprised many in English rugby.
A New Challenge in France
Barbeary's transfer to Bordeaux marked a significant shift in his career, leaving the Premiership for the first time. The move came after a mixed spell at Bath, where he showcased his immense talent but also struggled with injuries. "It was a tough decision to leave Bath, but I felt I needed a new challenge to grow as a player," Barbeary said in an exclusive interview. "Bordeaux offered me a chance to play in the Champions Cup regularly and test myself against the best in Europe."
The French club, known for their attacking flair and strong squad depth, have provided Barbeary with a fresh environment. He has quickly adapted to the demands of the Top 14, featuring in key matches and earning praise from coaches for his physicality. "The intensity here is different—every game is a battle. It's helping me develop a more rounded game," he added.
England Ambitions Remain Strong
Despite moving abroad, Barbeary remains firmly in the plans of England head coach Steve Borthwick. The back-rower has earned 12 caps for his country, with his last appearance coming in the 2023 Rugby World Cup warm-ups. "Playing for England is always the ultimate goal. I'm working hard to put myself in contention for the next Six Nations and beyond," he emphasized.
Barbeary's versatility—capable of playing at number eight, flanker, or even hooker—makes him a valuable asset. However, competition in the England back-row is fierce, with players like Ben Earl, Tom Curry, and Sam Underhill vying for spots. "I know I have to keep performing consistently for Bordeaux to get that call-up. The coaches are watching," he noted.
Champions Cup Aspirations
Bordeaux have qualified for the Champions Cup, and Barbeary is eager to make an impact on the European stage. The club has a rich history in the competition, and Barbeary believes they can go deep. "We have a talented squad with a mix of experience and youth. The Champions Cup is where you measure yourself against the best, and I want to help Bordeaux achieve something special," he said.
Reflecting on his time at Bath, Barbeary expressed gratitude for the opportunities but acknowledged the need for change. "Bath will always be a special club for me. I learned so much there, but sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone to reach new heights."
As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on Barbeary to see if he can translate his potential into consistent excellence, both for Bordeaux and England. His journey from Bath to Bordeaux is a testament to his ambition and desire to compete at the highest level.
