A soldier who died after falling from her horse at the Royal Windsor Horse Show has been named as Lance Bombardier Ciara Sullivan, 24, an 'exceptional jockey' with an 'infectious energy,' her commanding officer said.
Details of the Incident
Sullivan, a member of the King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery, fell from her horse at around 7 pm on Friday after exiting the arena. Despite immediate medical treatment, she died at the scene due to serious injuries, according to Thames Valley Police. The police are treating the death as unexplained but non-suspicious.
Military Service and Tributes
Sullivan served at Queen Elizabeth's state funeral in 2022 and the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla in 2023. Her commanding officer paid tribute, stating: 'Lance Bombardier Ciara Sullivan, 'Sully' to her friends, was to all who had the privilege of serving alongside her, a bright light in any room she entered.' She was described as an 'outstanding soldier and a role model to many.'
An immensely professional soldier, she was also a skilled footballer and dedicated to fitness, often helping others improve. 'Her patient coaching has helped many mounted gunners within the unit fulfill their potential,' the officer added.
Official Reactions
Defence Secretary John Healey expressed shock and sadness, calling Sullivan a 'brilliant young soldier who served our nation with dedication.' A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said the King was 'greatly shocked and saddened' and would share condolences with her family. The royal family was present at the arena but unaware of the severity until later.
