Hat-Trick Seeker Faces Class Three Test
All eyes will be on the Mark Newnham-trained Lucky Sam Gor this Sunday at Sha Tin as the impressive four-year-old attempts to secure a spectacular hat-trick of victories. The gelding, a son of Press Statement, steps up into Class Three company for the first time in the Neogence Handicap at 9.15am.
Champion Trainer's Uncharacteristic Struggles
While Newnham's charge is flying, the atmosphere at the stable of champion trainer John Size is decidedly tense. Renowned for slow seasonal starts, Size is nevertheless facing an unusually protracted barren spell. After surprising winners in early September, the yard has now saddled 86 consecutive runners without a victory, a run of form that will surely be causing concern for the legendary handler.
However, racing insiders believe it's only a matter of time before the stable's fortunes turn. A significant signal of intent comes from top jockey Zac Purton, who has ridden for Size only three times this season. Purton has suddenly chosen to partner the talented Szeryng for the stable in the Suisse Programme Handicap (7.35am) over six furlongs.
A Trio of Titans in Feature Race
The Neogence Handicap promises to be a thrilling contest. Size will be hoping his ultra-consistent Juneau Pride can defy a top-weight assignment over seven furlongs. The progressive four-year-old is expected to improve significantly from its seasonal run last month.
He faces stiff competition from the likely favourite, Little Paradise, who steps up in distance after a grinding victory over six furlongs in September. With potent early pace, Little Paradise is predicted to get a dream run from the start.
Yet, the potential dark horse is Lucky Sam Gor. While some may argue he has yet to beat elite competition, his impressive closing sectional times are impossible to ignore. His style of coming from far back in his races and still winning comfortably has marked him as a horse with considerable potential.
Carrying 10 pounds less than in his last win and receiving a stone or more from his principal rivals, Juneau Pride and Little Paradise, Lucky Sam Gor is perfectly poised to exploit a massive weight advantage and continue his remarkable ascent.
