Benedict Cumberbatch was captured on video having a heated argument with another cyclist who accused him of cycling through a red light in central London. The altercation took place on St Pancras Road and lasted approximately ten minutes.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, May 5. A witness reported seeing the actor's cargo bike run a red light in the cycle lane, prompting a fellow cyclist to give chase. The pursuing rider allegedly said, "I knew you were going to do that."
In the footage, the cyclist, wearing red trousers and a mask, can be heard calling Cumberbatch "deluded" and "a liar," while the actor fires back, accusing the man of "verbally abusing" him. The cyclist responded with a mocking crying gesture and said, "Oh no, I verbally abused the guy who completely repeatedly broke the law." Cumberbatch admitted to running the light once but denied going through a zebra crossing and three lights as alleged.
Witness Account
A fan who filmed the confrontation described it as "crazy" and "pompous road rage," adding that it felt staged. Despite the tension, Cumberbatch later posed for a selfie with two young admirers. The witness noted that the masked cyclist seemed taken aback upon realizing the actor's identity but continued his rage. The fan said, "Everyone was just stood there with jaws dropped."
The witness also commented on the disruption, saying the pair blocked the lane, preventing others from passing. They added, "I don't condone dangerous driving, but for this guy to follow him and cause an incident like this was worse than Benedict slowly cutting that light."
