The Manchester Super Giants clinched their first Hundred title with a gripping 5-run victory over the Trent Rockets in the final at Old Trafford on Sunday. The Super Giants posted 152 for 6, with Jos Buttler’s explosive 73 off 38 balls proving decisive, before restricting the Rockets to 147 for 7.
Buttler’s Blitz Sets Up Total
Buttler’s innings, which included six sixes and four fours, anchored the Super Giants’ innings after they were put in to bat. He shared a crucial 92-run partnership with Phil Salt, who contributed 34 from 22 balls. The Rockets’ bowlers, led by Sam Cook’s 2 for 28, fought back in the final five balls, but the Super Giants’ total proved just enough.
Rockets’ Chase Falls Short
In reply, the Rockets lost early wickets, with Alex Hales dismissed for 12 and Dawid Malan for 9. However, a 70-run stand between Tom Banton (45) and Lewis Gregory (38) kept them in the hunt. With 20 needed from the final set, the Super Giants’ bowler, Tom Hartley, held his nerve, conceding only 14 runs and taking the wicket of Gregory to seal the win.
Historic Victory for Super Giants
The victory marked a historic moment for the Manchester franchise, which had previously finished as runners-up in 2023. The win was celebrated by a sell-out crowd of 25,000 at Old Trafford, with the team’s captain, Buttler, praising his side’s composure under pressure.
The Hundred, now in its third edition, continues to draw large crowds and television audiences, with the final attracting a peak audience of 2.1 million on Sky Sports. The Super Giants’ triumph adds to the competition’s growing legacy, with the team now setting their sights on next year’s defense of their title.
