Jude Bellingham Acquires Minority Stake in Birmingham Phoenix Cricket Franchise
England and Real Madrid football star Jude Bellingham has revealed his purchase of a minority stake in The Hundred franchise Birmingham Phoenix, stating he feels a deep sense of obligation to his hometown. The 22-year-old midfielder has taken a 1.2% holding in the Edgbaston-based team, confirming himself as the previously unnamed investor referenced in Warwickshire's annual accounts.
Financial Details and Investment Structure
The investment deal, valued at over £800,000, comprises 0.6% from Warwickshire County Cricket Club and 0.6% from American investment partners Knighthead Capital. This transaction occurs against the backdrop of Birmingham Phoenix being valued at approximately £82 million during Knighthead Capital's acquisition of a 49% stake last year, following the England and Wales Cricket Board's sales initiative.
Bellingham's Personal Connection to Birmingham and Cricket
Bellingham, who grew up in Stourbridge and began his professional football career with Birmingham City, expressed profound affection for his roots. "I love Birmingham. I'm very grateful for what the whole city of Birmingham has done for me," he emphasized. "I love cricket as well so when I got the opportunity to get involved I didn't really think twice about it."
The football sensation, whose No. 22 shirt was retired by Birmingham City after his departure to Borussia Dortmund at age 17, has longstanding cricket credentials. He previously played the sport for Hagley in Worcestershire as a junior, demonstrating his genuine enthusiasm for the game beyond football.
Motivations Behind the Investment
Bellingham articulated multiple motivations for his investment, highlighting community engagement and youth sports development. "I feel like I owe the city something," he explained. "Right now it's difficult with how busy I am with football, but if there's a way in which I can help then I want to and this feels like a good way."
He particularly stressed the importance of providing sporting opportunities for children. "I think it's so important to get our kids in the city out there playing sports. I think it's crucial and the opportunity of me being a part of Birmingham Phoenix is to try and help people realise there's different avenues," Bellingham noted, acknowledging his own fortunate upbringing with access to both cricket and football.
Club Leadership and Community Initiatives
Stuart Cain, chief executive at Warwickshire, welcomed Bellingham's involvement, citing the player's understanding of high-performance sport and local community dynamics. "Jude loved cricket as a youngster and has wanted to be involved since The Hundred first went to market to secure investors," Cain stated. "He understands the importance of sport and how it can play a positive role in young people's lives. So, we look forward to working with him on a number of community initiatives moving forward."
Team Prospects and Upcoming Season
Birmingham Phoenix enters the upcoming season with promising leadership, featuring Jacob Bethell—one of English cricket's brightest rising talents—as captain of the men's team, and Australian legend Ellyse Perry leading the women's squad. The franchise's first home fixture is scheduled for July 24, with the final set for Lord's on August 16, marking an exciting season ahead for the newly invested franchise.
