Thomas Tuchel dismisses Harry Kane over-reliance claim after Ghana draw
Tuchel rejects Kane over-reliance claim after Ghana stalemate

Thomas Tuchel dismissed suggestions that England are overly dependent on Harry Kane following a frustrating 0-0 World Cup draw with Ghana in Boston. The result tempered the excitement from England's 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening match.

Dominant but toothless performance

England controlled possession and created several chances but struggled to break down a resolute Ghanaian defense. Bukayo Saka forced a smart save from Benjamin Asare, Nico O'Reilly hit the crossbar with a header, and Kane fired the rebound wide in stoppage time.

When questioned about the team's reliance on Kane after the captain failed to score, Tuchel pointed to contributions from other players in the previous match. 'Do Argentina rely too heavily on Lionel Messi, and France on Kylian Mbappe? That's what it is – it's world-class players who normally do what they do,' said Tuchel.

Tuchel defends Kane's role

The German coach noted that Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford also scored against Croatia. 'We had three different goalscorers in the first match, to rely on Harry is a natural thing because he loves the responsibility and takes it,' he explained. 'He was not involved as much as we'd like but that was not his fault. Our two central defenders were responsible for the build-up and it was eight against 10 then.'

Tuchel defended his decision not to substitute Kane for Ollie Watkins or Ivan Toney, calling the striker's late miss a one-in-100 error. 'I didn't see taking Harry off as the right choice. It fell to him and he is the right player for it to fall to, 99 times out of 100. The headlines would be a little bit different.'

Looking ahead to Panama

England face Panama in their final group game, likely encountering a similarly defensive opponent. Tuchel hinted at tactical adjustments but remained cryptic. 'I have some ideas, and I had an idea in the last water break but it was a bit hesitant. I have an idea how we can commit a little more through the middle – I don't want to explain it here because we might try it later in the tournament.'

He added, 'We haven't become predictable, we have wide wingers, we have full-backs in half positions who commit to an attack. We have options to go through the middle, but it was very difficult today because of a very strong defensive performance.'
