Conor McGregor has stated his intention to fight again in the UFC despite his comeback bout ending in just 69 seconds due to a leg injury. The Irishman announced on Instagram on Monday that he will undergo surgery and then return to training, saying: 'Surgery. Prehab. Return to martial arts practice. Go again. Final fight of the contract. Praise God!'
Fight Details and Injury
McGregor faced Max Holloway in Las Vegas on Saturday, but suffered an apparent knee injury seconds into the first round, resulting in a loss. He did not disclose the exact nature of the injury or provide a timeline for his return. In a social media post after the fight, McGregor claimed he was healthy entering the bout: 'I had no injury / injuries going into the fight. I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.'
Future with UFC
With one fight remaining on his UFC contract, McGregor's future with the organization remains uncertain. However, UFC CEO Dana White expressed interest in scheduling another fight, stating he had 'five ideas' for McGregor's opponent if he had beaten Holloway. White is reportedly mulling over options for McGregor's next bout.
Previous Injuries and Comebacks
McGregor has a history of recovering from significant injuries. He overcame a torn ACL in 2013, which he injured in his first bout with Holloway, and broke his leg in a loss to Dustin Poirier in 2021. His last UFC victory was a 40-second triumph against Donald Cerrone in January 2020.
Off-Octagon Activities
During his time away from the octagon, McGregor was involved in multiple lawsuits and became aligned with hard-right figures during an aborted run for the Irish presidency. Despite these distractions, he remains determined to return to the sport.
