The 2026 Tour de France continues with a challenging Stage 16 individual time trial set on the shores of Lake Geneva. The 40-kilometer route, starting and finishing in Évian-les-Bains, features a demanding profile that includes two categorized climbs and a technical descent, promising to significantly impact the overall standings.
Course Details and Challenges
The time trial begins along the lakefront before turning inland toward the first climb, the Côte de Novel (2.5 km at 6.5%). After a short descent, riders face the Côte de la Frasse (3.1 km at 7.2%), which averages gradients over 10% in parts. The final 10 kilometers include a fast, winding descent back to the finish in Évian-les-Bains. Race organizers expect the stage to take approximately 55 minutes for the fastest riders, with time gaps of over a minute possible between contenders.
Impact on General Classification
According to Tour director Christian Prudhomme, this time trial is designed to be "a decisive moment in the race, where pure power and descending skills will be tested equally." Current yellow jersey holder Tadej Pogačar is considered a favorite, but his rivals, including Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel, are strong against the clock. The stage could see the top of the leaderboard reshuffled, with potential time differences exceeding 90 seconds between the top contenders.
Historical data from previous editions shows that time trials on similar terrain have produced average speeds of around 43 km/h, but the technical nature of the descent may reduce speeds and increase the risk of crashes. Team tactics will also play a role, as riders start at two-minute intervals, meaning no direct drafting is allowed.
Weather and Spectator Expectations
Forecasts predict partly cloudy skies with temperatures around 22°C, providing ideal racing conditions. Thousands of spectators are expected to line the route, particularly on the climbs and at the finish area. Local authorities have set up fan zones and parking facilities to accommodate the influx.
Stage 16 is the only individual time trial in the 2026 Tour, making it a critical opportunity for climbers to gain time on pure sprinters. The stage winner will earn 20 points toward the green jersey, while the fastest time on each climb awards points for the polka dot jersey. The stage is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM local time, with the winner expected to finish around 4:30 PM.
