Jeff Stelling backs Dan Burn to stop Erling Haaland for England at World Cup
Stelling: Burn can stop Haaland for England at World Cup

Jeff Stelling has tipped Dan Burn to be England's secret weapon against Erling Haaland in the World Cup quarter-final, suggesting Thomas Tuchel will make a surprise change to his starting lineup. The former Sky Sports presenter believes the Newcastle United defender's physicality and impressive record against the Manchester City striker make him the ideal candidate to nullify Norway's biggest threat.

Burn's Impactful Cameo Against Mexico

England reached the last eight after a dramatic 3-2 win over co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca Stadium. The Three Lions played with 10 men for much of the second half following Jarell Quansah's red card for a dangerous challenge on Jesus Gallardo. Tuchel switched to a back-five formation and introduced Burn and Djed Spence in the 75th minute, a move that drew praise.

Burn made eight defensive contributions in just 26 minutes, including six clearances — a World Cup record for a player substituted on at that stage. This was his first appearance at the tournament and his major international debut. His inclusion in the squad had divided opinion, but his performance justified Tuchel's faith.

Haaland's Form and Norway's Threat

Norway have been one of the tournament's most potent attacks, scoring more than any team except France. Haaland is tied with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe on seven goals, leading the Golden Boot race after a brace against Brazil. Stopping him is a formidable task, but Stelling believes Burn is uniquely equipped.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Stelling said: 'I had this theory, that when we come around to playing Norway with the aerial threat of Erling Haaland… Dan Burn came on last night and everyone who watched the game will tell you Dan Burn was fantastic when he came on. Adrian mentioned that might be the only 25 minutes of World Cup football that he might get in his career. Well, I think he might play against Norway, because he has the physicality to play against Erling Haaland.'

Burn's Record Against Haaland

At 6ft 7in, Burn is one of the few defenders who can match Haaland's height (6ft 5in). Stelling highlighted Burn's outstanding personal record: in eight games against Haaland over the last four years, the Norwegian has scored only once. Tuchel must also reshuffle his defence for the quarter-final, with Quansah suspended and Reece James an injury doubt.

Burn himself is savouring the experience, saying after the Mexico win: 'I don't know if we had planned for this scenario – but I knew that I was being brought here for a certain reason. I wasn't going to start but there would be opportunities in the game where we need to see a game out or go for a goal that I was going to get it. I have been desperate to get on the pitch, I didn't want to leave the World Cup without getting on there. What he expected from me, knowing my height, knowing how I defend, it's blocking shots, blocking crosses, it was really trying to grind it out and I think that shows the character in the team. I am very proud to play for England at a World Cup, I never thought I'd be saying that.'
