A recent survey reveals that nearly a quarter of British sports fans intend to travel to the United States to watch live sporting events, as American leagues like the NFL and NBA continue to captivate a global audience.
Growing Interest in US Sports
According to the Chiliz US Global Fan Report, which surveyed 15,000 people, almost 40 percent of UK sports fans have attended a live match in one of the five major US leagues: NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, or MLS. Additionally, 26 percent have watched a US sport match within the UK. Britain has become a hub for US franchise sports, with three annual NFL games already held, joined this year and next by the NBA. West Ham United's London Stadium has also hosted MLB games.
Most Followed US-Based Athletes
The report highlights that Argentine footballer Lionel Messi is the most followed US-based athlete among UK fans, surpassing basketball icon Michael Jordan, Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham, NFL legend Tom Brady, and five-time NBA champion Kobe Bryant. Notably, two of the top five are associated with MLS side Inter Miami, which recently opened a new $1 billion stadium and will play a role in this year's FIFA World Cup.
Fan Engagement and Global Growth
Among the five major US leagues, only the NHL has fewer than 10 percent of respondents identifying as dedicated fans. However, 40 percent of fans do not follow MLS football, even if they are aware of it. Chiliz CEO Alexandre Dreyfus commented: "Fans are the true creators of value in sport – an industry projected to approach a $1 trillion valuation by 2033. The results paint a picture of deeply committed fans around the world, tuning in to follow their favourite US athletes and teams."
He added: "International fans are increasingly shaping how the US’ top leagues approach global growth. From more games being played overseas to the rise of global fan communities and digital initiatives, leagues are bringing fans closer to the action – wherever they are in the world."
Favorite Teams Among UK Fans
The report also lists the New York Giants as the favored NFL team among Brits, while the Los Angeles Lakers top the NBA rankings. Inter Miami is the preferred MLS team, with the New York Yankees and Rangers leading in MLB and NHL, respectively.
