Sadiq Khan Reveals Comprehensive £130 Million Crystal Palace National Sports Centre Revitalisation Plans

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has unveiled full details of his ambitious £130 million project to transform the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, located within Crystal Palace Park. A comprehensive planning application has been submitted to Bromley Council, marking a significant milestone for this major regeneration initiative.

Historic Restoration and Modern Additions

The ambitious project, expected to reach completion by 2028, will feature a full refurbishment of the Grade II listed main sports complex building. This will bring the centre's 50-metre swimming pool and diving pool back into active service after five years of closure. Furthermore, the currently operational 25-metre pool will be relocated into the main pool hall, consolidating all three aquatic facilities into a single, unified space on one level for the very first time.

In addition to the aquatic upgrades, the proposal includes the creation of several new sporting facilities. These encompass a six-court Padel centre, dedicated 3x3 basketball courts, five-a-side football pitches, and a full-size artificial multi-sports pitch. The indoor sports zones are also slated for significant enhancements designed to elevate elite performance and ensure year-round usability for clubs, athletes, and the wider community. These improvements will feature a new athletics track, a modernised weightlifting room, and an upgraded café.

Revitalising a Legendary Athletics Stadium

The iconic athletics stadium, originally built on the site of a football ground that hosted 21 FA Cup finals around the turn of the 20th century, will undergo a dramatic transformation. The plans call for seating to surround the entire stadium bowl upon completion. The Greater London Authority (GLA) has emphasised that this design was developed in collaboration with athletes specifically to amplify the atmosphere during live sporting events, describing the venue as "a historic stage, set for tomorrow's champions."

The 15-hectare sports centre, which first opened its doors in 1964, boasts a rich sporting heritage. It has been the venue for numerous notable events, including hosting the first final of the modern Women's FA Cup in 1971. From 1999 until 2012, the stadium was also the home of the prestigious London Grand Prix athletics tournament before experiencing a period of decline in recent years.

Leadership and Vision for the Future

Mayor Sadiq Khan, who initially announced the redevelopment project in the summer of 2023, expressed his enthusiasm. "I am delighted that the once-in-a-generation redevelopment of the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre has reached another key milestone," he stated. "This is an historic and much-loved national sporting and community facility, where many UK sporting stars have started their careers and trained, but it needs major investment and refurbishment and I am committed to supporting this."

Khan further highlighted the collaborative nature of the project, adding, "We look forward to working closely with partners and the local community to create an outstanding sporting venue as we work together to build a better, fairer London for all."

The project is being delivered by developer Morgan Sindall on behalf of the GLA. Richard Dobson, Morgan Sindall's Area Director for London, commented on the vision behind the plans. "The ideas that have been laid out represent something quite ambitious and different," he said. "Everyone working on this scheme has pushed hard to make the design a showcase in what a modern, sustainable, inclusive and community-centred leisure centre should look like – all while paying homage to the venue's inspiring legacy."

Dobson concluded by envisioning the centre's renewed purpose: "The site will not only reclaim its original vision of being a 'glass pavilion in the park' that supports the health and wellbeing of Londoners, but we will have laid the groundwork for a centre of excellence where a new generation of athletes can break and set their own records."
