Golden Tempo surged to victory in the 152nd Kentucky Derby on Saturday, making Cherie DeVaux the first woman to train the winner of the opening leg of the Triple Crown. Ridden by Jose Ortiz, Golden Tempo charged down the stretch at Churchill Downs in Louisville, winning at odds of 23-1. Renegade, ridden by Jose's brother Irad Ortiz Jr., finished second, while long shot Ocelli (70-1) took third.
A Historic Victory for DeVaux
DeVaux, who started her own stable eight years ago, became just the second female trainer to win any Triple Crown race, following Jena Antonucci's victory with Arcangelo in the 2023 Belmont Stakes. She won the Derby in her first opportunity. "I don't even have any words right now," DeVaux said. "Just so, so happy for Golden Tempo. Jose did a masterful job." During the week, DeVaux shifted from downplaying the significance to embracing her role as a role model for girls. She is the 18th woman to saddle a horse in the Kentucky Derby.
Jose Ortiz Triumphs Over Brother
Jose Ortiz claimed his first Derby win in his 11th try, showcasing his riding prowess at Churchill Downs. The victory came less than 24 hours after he won the Kentucky Oaks, the top race for 3-year-old fillies. "I want him to win the Derby, of course," Jose said of his brother. "But it happened that way. Today's my day and Golden Tempo's day." The race featured 18 horses after Great White was scratched for flipping and throwing his jockey.
The win marks a milestone for women in horse racing and a memorable family rivalry on the track.
