Reuben Ward Wins Historic Gold for Scotland
Scotland's Reuben Ward secured the men's all-around gymnastics gold medal on day three of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, becoming the first Scottish man to win the title. Ward scored 79.650 points, edging Canada's Felix Dolci (79.450) and Australia's Jesse Moore (79.000). The 22-year-old debutant held his nerve on the high bar to clinch victory, prompting an emotional celebration.
"I knew I could do it, but to actually do it is a whole different story," Ward said. "Trying to hold my nerve on the high bar was a really tough task. When the final score came through… it's just jubilant, pride, joy. This is a joint win."
Adam Ramsay-Peaty Bounces Back in 50m Breaststroke
Adam Ramsay-Peaty returned to the pool for the preliminary stages of the 50m breaststroke, just 24 hours after his shock defeat in the 100m final. The 31-year-old British swimmer admitted he had struggled with burnout and a broken foot over the last four years, hinting at estrangement from his family. He described his plan to end his career at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as "the hardest climb I have ever faced."
"There have been a multitude of things at play over the last few years – burnout, breaking my foot, fighting against something that you love. It's been hard," Ramsay-Peaty said. "Coming back to where I am now and making the decision to go for LA, I think this is going to be the hardest climb I've ever faced and the hardest test."
Mirabai Chanu Sets Records in Weightlifting
India's Mirabai Chanu Saikhom won gold in the women's 48kg weightlifting, breaking the Games record in both the snatch (85kg) and clean & jerk (105kg). Her 85kg snatch also set a Commonwealth record. Ruth Nyong of Nigeria took silver with a 168kg total, while Malaysia's Irene James Henry claimed bronze with 167kg.
Chanu passed up her third clean & jerk attempt after securing victory, finishing with a total of 190kg. Her performance highlighted India's strength in the sport.
Australia Dominates Netball Against England
In a highly anticipated netball clash, Australia defeated England 66-47 in Pool A at the Hydro. The defending champions produced a ruthless display, extending their record against England at the Games to seven wins from eight meetings. Australia were quicker, sharper, and more clinical from the opening whistle, with their star-studded attack led by Sophie Garbin. England's Roses had no fairytale finish this time, unlike their dramatic last-gasp triumph on the Gold Coast in 2018.
Idi Amin's Grandson Aims to Be 'New King of Scotland'
Boxer Aziz Abdul, known as 'Ringo,' vowed to become the "new king of Scotland" after advancing to face England's Damar Thomas in the super-heavyweight division. Abdul is the grandson of former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, who proclaimed himself king of Scotland in 1976. The 25-year-old said, "My grandfather's achievements inspired me. I am the son of the son. If I win the gold medal, I will be the baddest man in the Commonwealth, the baddest man in Glasgow, and the new king of Scotland."
