Australia Dominates the Pool on Day Five
Australia continued its strong performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing multiple gold medals in swimming events on Tuesday. Flynn Southam won the men's 100m freestyle, while Jenna Forrester claimed gold in the women's 200m individual medley. Kiralee Hayes added another gold for Australia in the women's 50m freestyle S13.
In the men's 100m freestyle final, Southam touched first ahead of Wales' Matt Richards, who took silver, and Australia's Kyle Chalmers, who settled for bronze. Chalmers, a veteran of the sport, managed to hold on for third place in a tightly contested race.
New Zealand and Scotland Shine in Medley Events
New Zealand's Lewis Clareburt won gold in the men's 400m individual medley, adding to his silver from the 200m medley the previous day. He finished ahead of Australia's William Petric (silver) and Canada's Lorne Wigginton (bronze). Scotland's Stephen Clegg thrilled the home crowd by winning gold in the men's 50m freestyle S3, with the arena singing "Flower of Scotland" during his medal ceremony.
In the women's 200m individual medley, Australia's Jenna Forrester overtook England's 16-year-old Amalie Smith and South Africa's Aimee Canny to claim gold. Smith held on for bronze, a remarkable achievement for the young swimmer. "I'm really tired but so happy," Smith said after the race. "I wasn't expecting anything as everyone in the race is such an incredible swimmer."
Track and Field: Heptathlon and Sprints Underway
On the track, the heptathlon 200m saw Northern Ireland's Kate O'Connor power clear of the field, winning her heat in 21.14 seconds. With Katarina Johnson-Thompson absent, O'Connor has a strong chance at gold. The women's 100m semifinals featured England's Amy Hunt, who ran 11.02 seconds in heavy rain to advance to the final. "She won't get away with so slow a start in the final, but she's a chance of winning this," noted commentators.
In the men's 100m semifinals, Jamaica's Yohan Blake failed to qualify for the final with a time of 10.06 seconds. Ghana's Benjamin Azamati and Joseph Saminu advanced as fastest losers. The men's 10,000m final is scheduled later in the evening.
Scotland and England Triumph in Bowls
Scotland won gold in a bowls tie-break, while England secured gold in the men's bowls and women's pairs bowls. England's Sam Tolchard said the Commonwealth bowls gold "will never be matched." Canada's Felix Dolci won his fourth gold of the Games on the horizontal bar, and England's Evans produced a perfect floor exercise for gold. Canada's Charron won her third consecutive gold in weightlifting.
Heavy rain caused a temporary suspension of field events, but action resumed with the hammer throw. The Games continue with more swimming finals and athletics events later Tuesday.
