Australia's swimming team delivered a dominant performance at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing 12 medals including five golds, according to team officials. The haul reaffirmed the nation's status as a powerhouse in the pool.
McEvoy and Palliser Lead the Charge
Cam McEvoy claimed gold in the men's 50m freestyle, touching the wall in 21.45 seconds, while Lani Palliser won the women's 200m individual medley with a time of 2:08.32. Both athletes credited their success to rigorous training and team support.
"This is the result of years of hard work and the incredible support from my coaches and teammates," McEvoy said after his race. Palliser added, "I'm thrilled to bring this gold home for Australia."
Team Effort Yields Strong Results
Australia also earned silver in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay and bronze in the women's 4x200m freestyle relay. In total, the team collected five golds, four silvers, and three bronzes across various events.
Head coach Rohan Taylor praised the squad's depth: "To see so many athletes step up and perform at their best is a testament to our program. We're proud of every swimmer who contributed."
Impact on Medal Standings
The swimming success propelled Australia to the top of the medal table in the early stages of the Games. With 12 medals from the pool alone, the team has set a strong foundation for overall dominance.
According to Commonwealth Games Australia, the swimming team's performance exceeded pre-Games projections, which had predicted 8-10 medals. The unexpected golds in the women's 200m butterfly and men's 100m backstroke were key highlights.
