Australia dismantled England 66-47 in a Commonwealth Games netball pool match at the Hydro in Glasgow, extending their head-to-head record against the Roses to seven wins from eight meetings. Sophie Garbin led the charge with 41 goals from 42 attempts, while Kiera Austin contributed 15 goals, 19 assists, and 17 feeds.
Dominant start sets the tone
The Diamonds raced to a 10-4 lead in the opening quarter, with Austin dictating play and exposing England's defence. England struggled to cope with Australia's relentless pressure, forcing interim head coach Anna Stembridge to substitute Sasha Glasgow before the end of the first quarter. Lois Pearson's move to goal attack briefly stemmed the tide, but Australia led 18-11 at the first break.
“It was very physical out there, but that’s what we expected and that’s what we prepared for,” said Garbin. “Obviously it’s nice to get the win, but England put up a really good fight.”
England's fightback falls short
England introduced Jayda Pechová into defence in the second quarter, shifting captain Fran Williams to goal defence. The changes initially worked, with Pechová disrupting Australia's rhythm as England opened the quarter with a 4-1 burst. However, Jamie-Lee Price and Austin restored Australia's composure, and the Diamonds stretched their lead to 35-24 by half-time. The contest grew increasingly feisty, with Liv Tchine shoving Courtney Bruce late in the second quarter.
Third-quarter demolition
Australia outscored England 21-11 in the third quarter, capitalising on turnovers, offensive contacts, and loose passes. With a 21-goal cushion entering the final quarter, the match was effectively over. “That’s definitely not the result that we came for but it’s also not the performance,” said Williams. “We were just far off our best and we never really got some momentum to get our teeth into the game.”
Cardwell provides late spark
England fan favourite Eleanor Cardwell entered to a huge reception and injected fresh energy, but her battle with Sarah Klau led to an official warning for Klau after sending Cardwell to the floor. England marginally won the final quarter, but the damage was done. Australia's ruthless efficiency underscored the gap between the two sides, with the Diamonds extending their Commonwealth Games dominance over England.
